I still maintain that this is a good, if not somewhat weird record. You need to understand Brian Wilson to get this record really; also some appreciation for Moog will go a long way. Is it the first synthpop record in earnest.
I own this somehow, beautiful album. I recommend everything at least try a Tenniscoats album, I think it wanes towards the midpoint and then picks back up.
I was depressed in 2018 and this album did a lot to help me refind myself... easily listened to it weekly and finally found a so-so copy of the CD at an Op Shop. I even bought a copy of that Ronan Keating album Gregg Alexander wrote majority of the songs for. I still laugh at the lyrics and I'm not at all a lyric guy. I agree that the record sorta stalls at Track 7 before picking back up.
I loved this record when it came out, at the time I thought it was a chill wave record… or at least taking cues from tha movement. I only got to see Lanegan once, and I’ve gotta admire his conviction for coming to Australia and playing this record in full when he could have toured on his back catalogue instead.
Compilation mini-LP (lol) of covers that I could only access through someone’s YouTube account until today. Love you Beck!
Triple J Feature Album Jan 26, 2026
I’m hard out of the demographic for JJJ, but it’s sorta fun listening to the album they place the most importance on for a week. Cavetown’s Running With Scissors is well timed, the album came out roughly 2 weeks ago and he’s touring here in 2 weeks.
I was trying to figure out how he’d released 6 albums by 27, but this guy has been going since he was 14.
Not a bad record, I tend to agree with popular consensus most of the time ... read more
Underrated record, goes unexpected places… or at least from the vantage point of someone who has listened to Got Sold On Heaven 100 times.
Probably the best pop record I’ve heard in recent memory, hooky.
Much better pop song than you’d think, feels like Teenage Dream but with actual empowerment themes. Fuck those creeps out with their 20 yo gfs.
“I’m not judgemental in my sweat pants with some Juicy hentai” may be the lyric of the year honest to god.
Talk to Me sounds like a Robyn track, misses the tension of With Every Heartbeat - I probably prefer Dopamine of the new record so far.
I like that they perform Goin’ Against Your Mind every time I’ve seen Built to Spill, which is surprisingly twice.
A friend loaned me the anniversary version around 2011 and I loved it, I found a box of tapes on a street corner and there’s Tubeway Army, Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon. This is a very hissy tape that lacks clarity and was probably sitting in someone’s garage for 20 years, it’s all the same to me.
She went more Cocteau Twins but kept her pop sounds intact, I have a soft spot for Hatchie - if she tours with a full band in 2026 I’ll see her.
Maybe I had the privilege of seeing Merpire play the record live stripped back with just an acoustic guitar at Lazy Thinking, hearing everything bare with the songwriting chops alone and then placing it in context again against the layered backdrop of Milk Pool maybe gave me much needed appreciation of the record… no I’m overthinking it.
Friends and Busy Doin’ Nothing are quintessential Beach Boys songs… Passing By is one of my favourite instrumentals. My copy has Good Vibrations for some reason.
Never clocked to me until this listen that Side B is a suite of songs, unbeatable record. Never gave Because tha much attention, really lovely song / weird hearing Moog in a Beatles track.
