AURORA - The Gods We Can Touch
90

I personally enjoyed this a lot, perhaps even the most out of all AURORA albums so far. I liked the darker, more experimental mood of this overall, and the production is just sooo good. Some of the lyrics sound a bit silly sometimes, but I can forgive it since I'm pretty sure most of the people behind this aren't native English speakers. Also, the first half is noticeably stronger than the second, at least in my opinion. Overall, I think I'll definitely be returning to this in ... read more

Olivia Rodrigo - the cure
88

While I didn’t really like drop dead, I did really enjoy this song. It feels very unique and distinct compared to Rodrigo’s other work, and the emotion is very real and genuine. It makes me curious to see what else the upcoming album has in store.

Joost - Boyband
70

Is it objectively very great? No. Is it corny? Absolutely. Did I still enjoy it? Yes, yes I did. It’s just three guys having fun and messing around in the studio for seven minutes, which I enjoyed. It may not be the most musically refined EP to exist, but I thought it was fun.

Favourite song: 2000

C418 - Minecraft - Volume Beta
100

I promised myself that I wouldn't get weird about this one, and then Flake started playing and I suddenly got such visceral nostalgia flashbacks to playing the christmas map on my old PS3 when I was like a kid that I almost cried.

Anyways, yes, I loved this one too. I'm surprised that people don't discuss this as much as Volume Alpha (or it at least feels that way) since this one has so many iconic and memorable tracks that I just can't imagine the game without. The ... read more

Tame Impala - Lonerism
82

Some parts did drag on a little, but overall this was still a very solid album experience. As always with Tame Impala, I did enjoy the production and lyricism a lot. Still, I don't think there are that many songs from this that I will be returning to.

Favourite songs: Why Won't They Talk to Me?, Feels Like We Only Go Backwards, Keep On Lying

Apulanta - Aivan kuin kaikki muutkin
90

Oh wow, an Apulanta album with more fans on AOTY than just me! How rare!

Anyways, this was maybe my favourite of their albums so far. So many fun, distinguishable and unique songs here that differ from the rest of their discography in a very memorable way, and I just love the melancholic vibe of it overall. It feels very genuine, and the production is really fun.

Favourite songs: 004, 006, 007, 008

C418 - Minecraft - Volume Alpha
100

I may or may not have almost cried multiple times while listening to this...

I know there isn't probably much I can say about this soundtrack that dozens of people haven't said already, but this is just such a phenomenally executed OST. It portrays the feeling of that adventurous loneliness that is very prevalent in Minecraft very well, and the sound of it is just so damn distinguishable that it makes you feel nostalgia for things you haven't even properly experienced. I enjoyed ... read more

Apulanta - Kiila

I'm always a bit nervous when giving reviews on Finnish albums and artists on this website for some reason -- perhaps since I don't enjoy being one of the only people to have an opinion on something -- but I just felt like I had to say something here. I greatly enjoyed this album, and as I've been going through more and more of Apulanta's discography, it has made me really wish that more people knew about them on this website. This album is full of bangers, and I overall ... read more

Olivia Rodrigo - drop dead

It just felt a bit underwhelming compared to a lot of her other songs so far, at least for me. I'm still looking forward to the album though.

KATSEYE - PINKY UP
15

This one actually just pissed me off a little ngl. The main hook of this song is awful, and the lyrics overall don't really help it much (why are we shaking ass in a parking lot??) It makes me sad to see KATSEYE consistently receive songs like this when the girls are clearly skilled enough to be able to do much more.

Ado - 残夢 [Zanmu]
54

Sixteen tracks and only one genuine standout song... damn

Anyways, if any project shows the inconsistency of Ado's musical style, it's probably this. I get that this is apparently meant to be a cover compilation (?), but the producer of the song does still seem to dictate the sound WAYY too heavily here... everything feels so mismatched and not at all like these songs belong to the same artist, which makes it feel disingenuous. Also, the songs themselves just aren't that great ... read more

BABYMETAL - METAL FORTH
67

This album was... weird. It's not terrible by any means, but it just felt really disconnected, if that makes sense? There is no sense of cohesion between the tracks, and the whole thing is pretty much just drowned in different collaborations that don't really add much to the experience -- at times, it barely felt like a BABYMETAL album at all. While some of the songs were pretty okay, some of them were also just extremely off-putting and perhaps some of the worst stuff I've heard ... read more

Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel
75

The first few tracks are wonderful, after which it turns a bit forgettable in the middle until it eventually picks itself back up again with the last two tracks. It's not my favourite Depeche Mode album by any means, but there's still a decent amount of tracks I enjoy and I liked the mellower sort of direction the project has compared to some of their other stuff. Still, it didn't really stand out to me, as some of the middle tracks just didn't really make me feel anything ... read more

Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
80

It's a fun project with great production, but some of the lesser known songs do fall a bit flat and sound a bit dated in terms of how well they've aged. Still, many great tunes here, and I always appreciate some solid synthpop. I love the melancholic feel of the lyrics and the atmosphere of the album as a whole, and I do understand why many consider it to be a classic.

Favourite songs: Shout, The Working Hour, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Head Over Heels

Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster

Lives were, in fact, changed.

Favourite tracks: Bad Romance, Alejandro, Monster, Telephone

ピノキオピー [PinocchioP] - UNDERWORLD
72

I suppose it isn't bad, but it does severely lack personality, especially when compared to PinocchioP's other works. So many of these songs sound the same and have very few interesting elements to them that would make them stand out from the others, and I generally feel like the introspectiveness of PinocchioP's typical lyrics isn't visible here. Overall, it doesn't feel like these songs even needed to be put on an album to begin with, since most of them have been out ... read more

KATSEYE - BEAUTIFUL CHAOS
69

It's nothing super special, but there are definitely more enjoyable tracks here and there that I might even return to in the future. There was a lot of disconnection between these tracks though, particularly the jump from Gnarly to Gabriela felt EXTREMELY jarring in terms of the style -- it really feels like they're just kind of doing everything., and not in a good way. Still, it's a decently fun project.

Favourite tracks: Gabriela, M.I.A

DEMONDICE - SHUT UP, GET HAPPY
49

Well, I suppose it wasn't completely terrible. The production quality actually sounded pretty decent in most of these tracks, and while improvements on the vocals and lyrics could be made, they were still far less obnoxious than those of her previous projects. Overall, while none of these tracks are something I would listen to regularly, I would say they are still kind of okay. I'm just happy to finally move on from covering her discography.

Favourite tracks: dark hour

Phantom Siita - 少女の日の思い出 [Girlhood Memories]
89

I've always been a fan of songs with a spooky, jazzy vibe so this really was right up my alley. The production here is great, Kikuo's work really shines through here once again, and the members of the group do a great job on the vocals overall. Basically, it's just full of bangers! I'm extremely curious about checking out some other stuff from Phantom Siita as well.

Favourite songs: キミと××××したいだけ, おともだち, ゾクゾク

AURORA - All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend
79

It's a solid debut album, and I like the fantastical vibes of it. Still, I wouldn't say the style is anything revolutionary or anything I wouldn't have heard before. The production quality is great, though, and AURORA's voice is really gorgeous.

Favourite songs: Runaway, Running with the Wolves, Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1), Under the Water
