Oooh, spicy, spicy. This album has a lot going on. We go from the abrasive rap of “Pirate Radio” to the smooth and pretty soul “Blessed are the Week” to the back-to-back bangers that are “Life Keeps Going” and “Most Normal American Voter”. The first has this rumbling 808s, a very catchy chorus, and layered rapping on the outro that makes it both dream-like and very fun to dance to.The second genuinely sounds like if Arcade Fire and Model/Actriz ... read more
Bite-sized Mini review:
Meh. The band feel very low-energy here, and there isn’t much atmosphere to speak of. The melodies are occasionally a bit catchy, but that’s about it. The lyrics are also rather repetitive, the same “I love you, you love me” stuff. The final song, “Your True Enemy” is the only real standout for me, with some very cool psychedelic tones on the guitar and trippy vocal harmonies. It’s very Electric Prunes. Everything else just kind ... read more
What’s, like, the deal with Amy Winhouse? What do you mean there was a british pop soul artist from the 2000s who made songs about drug addiction? None of those things go together.
One. Why does a song mention Dark Enlightenment? Tori, how do you know what that is? Tori, where have you been?!
Two. Her voice has aged very well. She sounds like she’s in her sixties, mostly because she is, but that works well for what she’s saying and the overall sound of the album.
Three. The album has a nice, very cool sound. “St Theresa” is a standout, even if it’s too long for a song that doesn’t change much. The scattered drums, deep piano, and ... read more
Tom Waits collabs with Massive Attack AND it’s a protest song AND he says the word “cum”.
Oh, this is the good shit.
Firstly, this album is absolutely gorgeous. We get all of these eerie drones and fluttering piano bits. It’s like Fishmans if they were pure evil. One of the best examples of how beautiful this album can be is “Futuro Ancestral”, with these layers of background vocals sinking into each other to create a truly spiritual experience.
The drumming is also a real treat. The textures are delightful, and it can get really groovy, like on “Ayaba ... read more
Electroslop.
This album’s sound doesn’t fail on a technical level, it’s just that it has a very generic electropop style making it really similar to the bazillion other electropop albums coming out this year for some reason. Blown-out bass, shrill synths, and nasally, processed vocals. The beats are mildly infectious, and I’m sure this album is fun enough when you’re drunk enough on the dance floor, but the same can be said of half a million other pop albums. This ... read more

LET’S GET SILLY EVERYBODY!
Angine De Poitrine are a sort of mini-sensation right now, flooding music youtube and reddit. It’s cool to see a band this wacky, this complex, this progressive get their time in the sun.
And let me tell you, this music is HURBGURBGURG. This ain’t your grammas or your grandfathers prog rock. We get microtonality. We get mixed time signatures. We get every musical idea possible thrown at the wall. It’s very creative. The little bits of ... read more
In 2000, Radiohead ushered in the new millennium with “Kid A”, an album who’s sterile electronic sound and dystopian vibes really set the scene for the next twenty six or more years.
Three years after that album, Benjamin Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello would create their own dark electronic prophecy, one that also used electronic music to create a bleak and unnatural environment. But, don’t get it twisted. This album is not just “Kid A if it was made by depressed ... read more
They seem to be introducing a lot of people to the weirder side of prog-rock, so that’s cool.
Bite-Sized Mini Review: This album’s lyrics are a bit topical, “Walls of division/A psychic insicision… manufactured seperation/ of our shared manifestation”. I like that, as it gives a purpose to the ugliness of the music.
I also like the diversity of sound here, going from psychedelic ambiance to bone crushing pain. It leads to songs that feel like epic journeys, especially the last song, “Last Light”. Whoo boy, now that’s a number! “First Red ... read more
Billy has a lot of important messages here, but he’s not a strong enough singer, guitar player, or composer to sustain an album that’s just him and his guitar. As such, we get an album where every. Song. Sounds. The. Same. Still, I can at least appreciate what he’s trying to do, focus just on the message without any frills.
YOU SEE, it’s a metaphor. Dr. Eggman represents man’s unwavering animal spirit, and Sonic represents Sonic.
All night I stayed up to listen to this album. I did it for you, Gorillaz. No matter how many times you break my heart, I come back for more.
Gorillaz is a band that’s difficult to explain. While the cover art and music videos may lead you to think the band is a group of cartoon simians, it’s actually a project by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett.
I’m a huge Gorillaz fan, with their 2005 album “Demon Days” being one of my favorites of all ... read more
This is a lot more polished than “Chaser”, with lyrics that feel a bit more refined. Like, we get “CITY”, a song that’s as dark as the content on “Chaser”, but instead of surreal sadomasochism, we get a sense of dread and terror, “The people here to kill us, they look just like you and me”. Is the song about transphobia and the rise of the far right? Maybe.
Something else interesting is the sample on “My Head Hurts”. It’s ... read more
Mini bite size review-
If you’re completely unaware of trans internet culture (r/196, human domestication project, all that jazz), then this album is probably mildly terrifying. However, if you’re an enlightened scholar who knows what a Blahaj is (like me), then this album feels more like a culmination of this culture- the perfect example of the trans internet space.
The lyrics about being a flesh doll and a pet mixed with the hyper, intense bizarre beats leads to an experience ... read more
I was going to not write anything real on this website for a week so I could focus on other things (hacking into government computers, mostly), but I just felt like letting everyone know how sick this album is.
This whole album has an eighties throwback sound that’s ten years ahead of is time. You know how the 2010s was filld with all this faux-eighties music (Oneohtrix Point Never, the Weeknd, all of Vaporwave, etc). This album is that in the 2000s, with these really dreamy synths, ... read more
