nothing I haven't heard before. the production is bland and the songwriting, while amusing due to its candidness, isn't remotely clever. I appreciate Allen's vocals, though they aren't super noteworthy either.
brilliant... twigs does something here that can never be replicated. every time I listen, I am floored by the moment when the production swells and crinkles at the exact second she refers to the song’s namesake. additionally I am unable to look at Robert Pattinson the same. good batman though
really liked it at first, now less so. was hoping for more diversity. regardless, one of the most consistent discographies ever continues!!!!
i would say that it’s impressive how someone who is capable of putting out a great record & who has every resource their disposal continues to put out pop-slop, but it’s just disappointing. the writing is terrible— “cringe” doesn’t work for me as a descriptor anymore, and the production is decent at best and boring at worst. the songs meld into one another and when she finally strings together a decent bridge we’re let down by a lackluster chorus. ... read more
I prefer this record over Mezzanine despite the sound being a lot less adventurous. "Unfinished Sympathy" is such a ride.
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (14/100) - should be here
good! seems to be a few filler tracks
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (13/100) - A worthy inclusion, I'd pick Sings the Blues
I love so much that's here. I'm biased– one of my favorite novels ever mentions "Mighty Sword," where the author writes a character who is enamored by pauses in music. "Mighty Sword" features a pause that, as the character puts it, is "A MINUTE AND FOURTEEN SECONDS LONG!" That pause represents much of what else is on this album. The record is laid-back and much of the instrumentation is sparse. The sincerity present in the lyrics is endearing but ... read more
This release, which is essentially just Gaga's first two records combined, makes for an excellent project. So many bangers, but it's long and it drags.
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (12/100) - A worthy inclusion but I wouldn't pick it
there's four classic songs here and then everything else is just okay
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (11/100) - Not a top 100 album of all time
it's a decently sized record but is still bloated & falls apart in the second half
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (10/100) - Not a top 100 album of all time
baby's first Tyler album. will always be my favorite but he outclassed it every way with "Igor" but tbh Tyler's production has barely evolved since "Goblin"
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (9/100) - Not a top 100 album ever, should be Igor, love this record (even though I can't listen to it because I overplayed it 8 years ago)
simple and beautiful. def repetitive at times though
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (8/100) - probably not a top 100 album ever but still wonderful and not a bad pick
yeah! yeah! yeah! this is better than what I thought it would be :)
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (6/100) - Not a top 100 album of all time
I adore so many tracks here but the three track run of Glory and Gore, Still Sane, and White Teeth Teens drags this album down significantly. Can't believe she was sixteen when she made this.
Apple Music 100 Best Albums (5/100) - Not a top 100 album ever.
(& Melodrama is a better record)
