I bought this album on release, and looking back, fuck you, I still like this record. Kinda. Filled with songs that feel engineered to play on the radio (Looking at you, Centuries and Immortals) and songs that feel like they're going somewhere, but don't. (Irresistible, Jet Pack Blues) I still have a lot of love for Fourth of July- that Son Lux sample carries (Honestly, I should just listen to Lost it to Trying) I also tentatively liked Novocaine and Twin Skeleton's.
this is the first album I ever listened to track by track!!! and it's certainly not as good as I remember (maybe some of the most generic pop rock of all time), but there are a couple of songs I still enjoy- mostly due to nostalgia. genuinely surprised I didnt like this at 12-13... embarrassingly (more like stereotypically) I liked panic! n all the other pop punk folks but this never appealed to me. and it still doesn't
just can't get over $crim's vocals and the second hand embarrassment I get when I pay attention to the lyrics
my favorite aes album. blood sandwich is one of my favorite pieces of music.
this album came out at the height of my adoration for panic! and honestly I can see why that stopped after listening to this LP (I still like king of the clouds)
Presented as a diversion from her usual sound (the diversion being far worse production and lyricism than she usually has to show) Taylor manages to create some terribly obnoxious pop songs (LWYMMD, ... Ready For It?) on her most surface-level record to date. (Points for getaway car and the refrain on end game)
shoutout to my twt mutual for convincing me to listen. neat shoegaze/dream-hyperpop and a lot of guitar noises I really enjoy
In a fight with God over my deep-seated resentfulness of country music lessening after this.
