Rayes sophomore release is theatrical, grand and orchestral in every sense of the word. The theatrical feel of this album is done so impeccably well. Raye is definitely a vocalist that puts a lot of creativity and ambition into her music, and this album feels so intentional with everything that its trying to achieve. There are grand choir pieces, rich and colourful jazz chords, even a feature from Hans Zimmer himself. The concept deals with a women that navigates life through her own ... read more
50 Words for snow strives most in its simplicity and atmosphere. The songs are quite long for Kate Bush standards but dont quite lead to satisfying payoffs. You can also tell how much her voice has aged over the years, as she is not as expressive or as over the top as she was on her earlier records. The nature of this album is cold and wintery, while not as unique as an album like vespertine, still feels tranquil to this album experience. The writing sometimes feels a bit scant , not ... read more
Inferno is an album that feels both apocalyptic and nostalgic simultaneously. It feels like a fusion of their first 2 albums musically, as it feels dark and unsettling but also hopeful and comforting in spite of all the chaos that is embroidered in it. The record feels like classic Boards of Canada but also feels fresh and reinventing for the group. This is all in all very close with their debut, and feels like a soundtrack describing the state of finding comfort in the destitution of ... read more
Detour feels very inspired by hyperpop and edm of the 2010s, with shallow lyrical depth and heavily processed vocals. You can tell Kims inspirations are evident, through the likes of Charli XCX, dorian electra, even Christine and the Queens. I can't also help but feel quite hollow when listening to this, because while these songs are listenable and are good within the moment, they also feel dated and a by-product of the era it was born out of. It also is not the most cohesive pop record ... read more
Charm is mainly chill, comforting bedroom pop with quiet singer-songwriter vocals and introspective writing. There is a distinct feel throughout the album that keeps it interesting to listen to. However, the album suffers from a lack of diversity of instrumentals and a limited vocal range, with a lack of vision and direction to give these songs more of a purpose . Not every song on this project lands, but it is serviceable enough to make Charm a good time.
Wallsocket is underscores most conceptual record to date, with an eclectic display of punk, pop, noise and indie rock. The record takes place in a fictional town in America called Wallsocket, and it follows various characters who struggle with isolation, alienation, young adulthood, trauma and the feeling of being caught up in rural America. Each track gives details on the town and presents a character study on each of each of them, Some of these tracks feel emotionally charged and cinematic, ... read more
