V&U Symphoria - Crown Us
35

God, the mixing on this thing is ass. I ain't going to be nice to the track just cause I edit for some of V&U's talents. The vocals are all good but god damn there's always something distorted blaring over the top of the mix for no reason, be it bass, horns or this other not sure what it is that just makes everything else feel wack. Not to mention that Liora's vocals specifically seem to be mixed hollower than I can tell they actually are in the bridge with some kind of effect that makes ... read more

TISM - Machiavelli and the Four Seasons
75

Greg! The Stop Sign is a classic piece of Australian media, a truly trascendant piece of media about how in the end, no matter whether we are well educated, poor, do our homework in high school or become a drop out junkie with a tumour in our brain, it doesn't matter when you get t-boned by a god damn semi-trailer cause your dickhead friend missed a stop sign and you're all dead on the side of the road.

TISM is one of those Australian bands which really embrace that kind of pointed, sardonic ... read more

Danny Brown - Tantor

Songs that really make you FEEL like you have a Mexican friend named Chinese Mike

6arelyhuman - Myspace Addiction

I really want to sit here and say that this is my favourite project out of that weird internet hypersexual Lady Gaga glam pop x overly distorted cloud rap kind of circle but the ear fatigue sets in so quickly on this project. When I started I thought it was honestly kind of fun but every song just felt like it was taking 4 minutes when nothing on here breaks much more than 2 and a half minutes.

Tom Cardy - Beautiful Mind
85

This song really makes you FEEL like you're undergoing psychiatric therapy

Teenage Joans - The Rot That Grows Inside My Chest
65

Honestly, this album went way harder than I expected it to. I feel like since Teenage Joans released their debut EP which was primarily made up of songs that they'd been touring with for a few years at that point, the Kuarna/Adelaide based duo had been trying ways to reinvent their sound. Being at their gigs Carli had been trying to head into a hard rock/screamo direction, with tracks like Terrible being the primary song they were road testing, but when it came to recording the song it just ... read more

This album is a sensual, queer sugar rush, it has a lot of stuff that's positive but it kind of paints itself into a bit of a corner after Still Got It. I wish it overall had a bit more pep, but the dance pop tracks and the city pop influences on In My Room and How To Stay With You were a very pleasant surprise.

A few other small thoughts. I think Got Me Started feels a bit more at home on the record than as a single. The saxophone on How To Stay With You was super fun. I did not pick the song ... read more

thatboykwame - vices

Honestly, I have no idea what Kwame is going for on this track... It might grow on me with another listen or two but it's a lot softer compared to what I usually hear from Kwame it sounds like he's trying to mix like, Kid Cudi and Travis Scott in some way but IDK it's just not clicking.

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers - I Used To Be Fun
70

This song hits different when you're sitting at work with nothing to do exhausted from being at work all day thinking about going out with friends.

Nanashi Mumei - mumei
70

It reminds me a lot of Porter Robinson but I'm kind of mixed on how Mumei's rougher vocals go with the actual backing at the core. It feels very derivative at times with the polaroid camera flash sfx especially feeling straight lifted as an idea from one of hte tracks off Nurture, but I also get it in the context of Mumei's character having lost all of her memories. It's solid and I think Mumei's vocals are good, I just wish it was a bit more ambitious.
Also, EN VTubers release a song in ... read more

Mega Infinity - Chaos Magick

I really wanna like this more than I do. There's some good stuff but sometimes it just lacks that extra punch or balancing to really make it soar, or it will just be a bit too unsubtle. Chaos Magick feels like a headscratcher of a track in terms of just HOW many elements are happening all at once. Dude Poisoning I want to like, the chorus is pretty good but damn I've just heard songs like this done way better from acts like Cry Club or Catbite. However, Common Sense Kid's pseudo rap verse and ... read more

Final Girls - No One Gets to Go Home
75

This is all around a solid EP. It's a fun blend of indie rock, skate punk and emo that shows a lot of variety across the 5 tracks. The first two tracks are more skate punky. Fake the Maps is somewhere between indie rock and skate punk, while Doing Better goes more singer-songwriter indie rock and both vocally remind me of the charisma of Wil Wagner from Smith Street Band.

Overall I think the biggest issue with this album is the vocal mixing. Sometimes the vocals are nice and clear, but there ... read more

Hooligan Hefs - Sinning Winning Living
45

I went into this not expecting a lot, this was much more of a UK Dril sound than the party rap they blew up with on tracks like Send It. It's kind of discount Griselda vibe, with some really wack choices of arpeggiated synth runs over the instrumental.

HOWEVER, the song checkmate goes insanely hard. Vicious bars and flow with insanely strong presence that feels earned after they blew up with Send It.

The following two tracks don't really capitalise on that energy enough and leave the album ... read more

Roger Waters - The Dark Side of the Moon Redux
15

This really doesn't need to exist there's honestly nothing more to say about it. Sure there are some nice interpretations of a few moments and I don't think it's absolutely pissing all over the original but it's just fucking boring.

Claire Rosinkranz - Just Because
20

This album is TikTok pop (derogatory) written by someone whose biggest problems in life is someone being a little bitchy to her. My only experience with Claire Rosinkranz was her song Screw Time, a pretty mediocre song about being 17 and not wanting to do a 9-5 and otherwise not seeing where her path forward is in life, on high rotation on Triple J. Ibwas really expecting this to be boring but god damn the lyrics of this thing and the production can be downright horrendous at times.

Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion - Bongos
60

Yall are actually wild for this score. Cardi's bars don't really go as hard as they do on WAP, Megan Thee Stallion absolutely fucking carries this song but a fucking 30 yall are prudes.

Mall Grab - Rascal
60

Honestly, the songs are a bit long, especially with Workout and Everything being 5 minutes long.

Foxes has a really nice atmosphere, especially with how the vocal samples are incorperated but on relisten I feel like a minute could probably be cut. Workout is definitely too long it shows everything it has to play with within like the first 2 minutes of the song and then goes for 5 minutes. Everything is the only track on here with prominent vocals but they just don't sit right in the mix so ... read more

A.B. Original - YES
85

Unsurprisingly on a track about the rights of First Nations Australians being debated by old white politicians. No bullshit on this just staring at you in the face and saying "why the fuck is this even a question for some of you".
"Never vote the same way as Hanson" is the truest thing Briggs has ever spat, and he's spat a lot of true things.

ASHWARYA - Why's It Gotta Hurt
55

Ashwarya is an Indian-Australian artist who started getting a bit of buzz in Australian indie circles over tracks PSYCHO HOLE and Biryani, as well as landing a collab on her first EP with Vic Mensa. Unfortunately, that buzz never really seemed to take off, as I feel like despite her being able to incorperate a lot of different genres into her music well, she doesn't really have a strong core sound to really solidify her music all as one thing. That creates this chameleonic artist who ends up ... read more

Briggs - Extra Extra
55

It's got less of the pop rap that the previous singles he dropped had but it's just got less bite to it and the instrumental is... not great. "Decapitation's the only way they'll be ahead of me" is a fucking banger of a bar though.

A large amount of bad faith criticism has been levelled towards Keli Holiday due to his politics and his proximity to Abbie Chatfield, I literally heard people IRL talking shit about him as a result having barely listened to most of his stuff."
