RXKNephew - Slitherman Vs Nephew
60

Truly one of the songs ever (it's so bad it's good)

C.O.F.F.I.N - Australia Stops
80

If you want some frenetic Aussie punk in line with The Chats or Amyl and the Sniffers but with a little more meat on the bones lyrically and topically, check out this new C.O.F.F.I.N record. It can definitely start to overstay its welcome with the length of some songs but still an absolute banger of an addition to the Aussie punk that's come out this year.

June Jones - Pop Music for Normal Women
60

Sometimes discovering an artist live is the greatest curse you can have on your experience with an artist. June Jones was an artist I discovered over this weekend (28th of Oct 2023) on a whim skipping out on Kaiit to hang out with someone I met during Katie Dey's set and her timeslot had Kaiit and Gut Health, two huge Aussie indie acts on the circuit at the moment, and she had the whole crowd who was initially watching in trepidation off an emotionally destructive Katie Dey set on their feet ... read more

Sigrid - The Hype
60

I feel like this EP finds itself diminishing returns between soaring synth pop transitioning more and more into HAIM-esque country pop that feels less and less distinct as it goes on. The Hype is a great track no wonder it's the title track of this EP, and Borderline is a fun cut too. Ghost honestly hits as a country pop song channeling a few strong notes but I feel like it doesn't stick the landing at all with Wanted It To Be You but kind of having very little personality. Enjoyed this more ... read more

katie dey - never falter hero girl
85

Easily Katie Dey’s most… tangible record if that makes sense. Something on here feels so finely crafted at a lot of times from the progressions of songs to the way the entire album feels like it’s building up to a crescendo by the title track. While there are a few obvious comparisons to be made on this album to artists like Porter Robinson on tracks like swallower but that’s always in a positive light.

The intro track, swallower, uses the dynamic shift between very ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord

Prodigy if they didn't suck (I didn't listen to the extended versions of the song)

Okay but for real it's a perfectly acceptable and fun Gizz record but then you've just god Petrodragonic was just sheer thrash bliss that it feels so much tamer. It's still good and a 6/10 Gizz album demolishes most artists' discogs.

The Cat Empire - How To Explain (Anniversary Edition)
30

It's probably not this low but god this is just such a downgrade. Felix turning it into this weird spoken word thing, the fact nothing can be left on it's own. Everything is just soaked in 5 things at once, especially the lack of crescendo on the MAIN part of "Music is the language of us all". It's such a downgrade.

Angie McMahon - Light, Dark, Light Again
75

A strong sophomore release from Angie McMahon, held back by the fact some tracks like Letting Go, Exploding, Serotonin, and Music's Coming In just so heavily overshadow with sheer emotional weight and grandiosity some of the other tracks on this album. Not to say that those other moments aren't good, but it feels like you're coming down off an absolute high at times on this record. Exploding is a 9.5 - 10/10 song though. Second half of the album is easily a much more emotionally cathartic ... read more

Clowns - Endless
75

This is just overall a fun ass hell thrash/harcord punk record. BISEXUAL AWAKENING being a track about threatening to fuck every member of someone's family, Z3r0s&On3s making binary into a weirdly headbanging vibe on a track, a track about having a knife and a closing track which places dramatic instrumentals to back a rather drab reading of a story about Ned Kelly and it's great. This album is just a blast.

The Grogans - Find Me A Cloud
60

It's fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

The Grogans have kind of come out of nowhere in the Australian indie circuit after Triple J chucked I Cannot Read Your Mind and I think Can't Stand onto high rotation, and until recently I wasn't aware they already had 5 whole albums to their name. The group are certainly strong players, but it just feels like a band going through the motions of bands they already look up to like The Kinks, Pink Floyd as well as Australian acts like Ocean Alley. They're good players ... read more

Cattera - Hunger Of The Beast

Meow meow meow meow meow meow

Mallrat - Uninvited
30

I'm gonna be totally honest, this is not what I expected going back to the start of Mallrat's career. Uninvited was the first single she blew up with and after hearing it again getting radio play and finding the song drab, repetitive and just kind of boring I felt like I had to go back and revisit Mallrat's earliest EP in her catalogue after the disappointment that was her debut album lingering in my mind... And honestly, this was almost a template for a lot of what went wrong on her debut ... read more

venbee - zero experience
45

Overall I'm kind of diappointed by this album overall. I can feel venbee trying to not pigeon hole herself across this mixtape but at the same time I feel like not a lot really matches the highs that are messy in heaven or gutter. rampage comes close and If I Could Have Saved You is an emotional high for the album, but at the same time tracks like low down feel so tame in comparison to the rest of the best of hte album that it just leaves these voids in the tracklist.

Mori Calliope - SNEAKING
20

As someone who has become a Mori apologist as of late, this is just bad. I'm sorry I really tried but it feels like she regressed hard on this thing and my god that chorus is ear grating. The production probably that most reserved I've heard on Calli's music lately.

Chloe Dadd - Fuzzy Logic
75

Falling somewhere between CRJ styled synthpop and the laid back energy of a HAIM track, with a few hyperpop tracks like VITAMIN C thrown into the mix, Chloe Dadd's debut EP is a fun little ride for a solid up and coming Yuin/Ulladulla NSW act.

Jane Remover - Census Designated
60

I want to like this, I really do. I think it improves towards the end but my god, these songs are long and these dynamic builds all hit exactly the same after the 5th song. I feel like the biggest problem within this album is it feels like there's only two modes, quiet and loud. As you get towards the last 4 tracks maybe I think Jane gets better at layering things and that's what's bumping this rating up to a 60 and not a 55 or even a 50, but damn the first 6 tracks all feel like they have the ... read more

れをる [Reol] - BLACK BOX
75

So after listening to this, I think it's given me a better understanding of what kind of sound Mori Calliope has been trying to replicate as of late. This very whimsical, dramatic yet griff kind of J-rap that feels fun without feeling overbearing. However what I think this Reol record has really strongly going for it is a stronger ear for production, with beats that feel loud and playful but unlike a lot of her contemporaries, have a balance within itself. I think that's missing in the big two ... read more

A Day To Remember - You're Welcome
25

I listened to this when it came out. I did not go back to listen to this, I do not want to, I remember hating it so fucking much at the time and yeah no it's good to come on here and see no one else liked this thing and I wasn't just missing something having never listened to ADTR before.

SyKo - #BrooklynBloodPop!
45

Honestly, the mixing on this is just kinda bad overall. Feels kind of outdated in hyperpop at this point with the appeal seeming more in how loud things are than trying to make anything that sounds unique.

Etienne Sin - Sinna, Vol. 1

Wow, that guy sure did say the N-word a lot

On Keli Holiday - Capital Fiction
"@EliMaynard respectfully, I think that it provides context to this review, the music and it's reception. A large amount of bad faith criticism has been levelled towards Keli Holiday due to his politics and his proximity to Abbie Chatfield, I literally heard people IRL talking shit about him as a result having barely listened to most of his stuff."

A combination of the way the biggest artists in Australia feel like they just refuse to try and an exhaustion with the whole "no one wants to dance anymore" rhetoric everywhere it just broke me."
