I think one of the most difficult things for a new rapper to do is make their mark on the scene from the get go. I've heard it happen so many times in the Australian rap scene, The Kid Laroi, Lee, Vv Pete. Acts who come out of the gate with this attempt at seeming like this tough guy braggadocios battle rapper but all of them end up feeling corny as hell.
JJ4K feels different. Feeling like a combination of modern Australian greats like JK-47 and ONEFOUR with the fire of an artist you'd want on ... read more
You can stop releasing B-Sides from The Great Expanse whenever you're ready Suffa.
What does Green Day really have to offer in 2024? Sure, tracks like Dilemma are okay but also it made me wanna listen to Fluorescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys even if it is an introspectively poignant song about alcohol issues but it just doesn't have the same writing or strong song at its core, and that's the best song on here. At its worse it's either boring as all hell, old man yells at cloud, the whitest lib reads on what's wrong with America or ripping off So What by P!NK for some ... read more
"Since we're about to die, I have one more secret I wanna share with you. I did not care for plastic death by glass beach"
"Petah what?"
I did not care for it."
"But Petah, it's so good it's the perfect album"
"It insists upon itself Lois"
This album just didn't work for me unfortunately. I can see what a lot of people see it it but personally, I think that there's too much going on at times on some of these tracks that make them hard to ... read more
One of the stronger rock acts I've heard in the Australian indie scene as of late, Wadawurrung Country Geelong band Grytt manage to have this nice blend between classic rock styles and modern UK rock charisma that makes this album feel fresh, even if it's not the most memorable album ever.
Closibg track The Freezer is a brutal fuckin banger though.
Vacations is a band from Mulubinba/Newcastle that's from my understanding been popping off way more outside Australia than within it. I feel like this kind of qauint indie folk rock just isn't the vibe in Australia and I wasn't even aware that Midwest was by them until hearing this album cause that did actually get a decent but of radio play last year on stations like Triple J.
However, coming into this album with an open mind, I can confidently say that Midwest is probably the most life ... read more
I mean, I enjoyed my time with this, but I just don't have the knowledge of Spanish music to feel like Ixm really getting as much out of this as I was hoping. Kali Uchis is an artist who I've never quite clicked with as much I would have liked to and which I enjoyed my time with this album plenty, I don't feel like that's changed all that much...
I could not pick most of these songs out of a lineup of your stock standard j-pop/j-rock tracks and the fact that one of two of those songs I can pick out is a Fake Type song... yeah...
Overall a solid queer punk release that has some tinges of pop punk and ska throughout the runtime. One of the better albums out of the Ska Punk International label so far. Tracks like Liar, People Please and Users are absolute belters and frontwoman absolutely goes crazy with the energy and passion on these tracks. Braindead is a super unique track as well being this chiptuney pop punk track. There are times where Eevie's vocals don't quite work but overall it's a really strong punk record.
I really wanted to like this, with a range of experimental producers from the Australian music scene working on different tracks, including one half of the duo who made one of my favourite sounding project of 2023 Ryan Fennis, I was really hoping for this to be amazing. Bayang seems like an interesting person with a lot to say.
However, this EP feels like it's clashing with itself. Despite wanting to highlight the incredible work of underappreciated Australian artists and producers, it almost ... read more
Oh wow I never wrote a review for this one uhhhhhh.
Yeah I really overrated this initially giving it a 90, I don't quite think what's on offer here is quite that good. However, what is here is a quite strong blend of rock, singer songwriter and electronic art pop with themes of transhumanism without the associated baggage of having to acknowledge Grimez exists.
Software Update feels particularly unique cause it feels like your standard singer songwriter affair that might have a shot at some ... read more
So, I wanted to get this out of the way first. The struggle with albums like this is when you have a 14 minute song that's a 6/10, it feels like a longer slog than a 3 minute 2/10 dip on a different album just because MY GOD THE OTHER 3 SONGS ARE PEAKS.
Tracks 1 and 2 are great, effortlessly blending jazz and heavier metal elements to create this lovely and unique blend of intricate chaos. Track 2 especially is just an incredible journey across its runtime, whereas track 1 feels like despite ... read more
I feel like Elira could do better (check out her Shoujo Rei cover for context) but still a pretty strong first original song from her. It's a little uninspired instrumentally and feels like she made a Vocaloid demo and tried to follow it to a tee but it's still a chill little track.
OMG I FORGOT TO REVIEW THIS ALBUM AND I LOVED THIS RECORD!
This album is fucking beautiful. It's short, sweet, varied and unapologetic in what it wants to talk about. It can swap between beautiful soulful R&B to absolutely visceral boom bap without feeling like it's missing a beat. That doesn't mean that the soulful rap cuts don't hit as hard with tracks like Run Run Run which talks about growing up somewhere where you're always feeling like you have to run from gun violence and the relief ... read more
I was late to getting to this album because I was trying to do a deep dive on Liturgy before getting to this record and then just forgot half way through when Ark Work was mid as fuck. This album feels like an adventure, with each track feeling like this beautiful distorted cacophony while still feeling well put together at the same time. Mixing angelic choirs and these dark metal riffs gives this feeling that you can never quite settle down but also give the album some beautiful light and ... read more
See review for the deluxe version, this crop of songs lack the charisma of the deluxe edition. Just compare the two Sukihana tracks and tell me the deluxe doesn't clear.
I don't trust music nerds for shit on anything even mildly sexual. Yall are prudes. Like, she made a whole song called "I'm The Shit" and didn't do a single bar actually referencing shit which is a low bar but surprisingly not something many people clear.
Sexxy Red's flow is probably the hardest part of the record for me to get into. The production on this thing is fun, Sexxy Red is unapologetic in how horny she is, she goes hard with Chief Keef and the use of an ass slap as a kick on ... read more
It's not outright terrible, just blatantly uninspired. I don't think there's anything on here that feels like an original idea by the band, from the ramge of sounds that feel like they're ripping the sounds step for step from various classic rock bands or from the 2000s "teeny bopper" era of power pop. Everything on here feels done before.
The lyrics are pretty shallow too, just random "we love rock and roll" and "girl I'm so cool I'm a rockstar" type tracks.
Not ... read more
Adult contemporary is a difficult genre for me to get into as they are often so sparse amd non-specific that they leave you with little to walk away with afterwards. Some songs in here like My Witch and the title track are really strong and create this wonderful sense of atmosphere and the lyricism is rather intricate, then you have songs like the opening two tracks and especially protest song which feel so non-specific in what they're talking about that they just feel like nothing. Protest ... read more
