Vampire Weekend for straight people. It feels like it's trying to have quirky ideas and novel ideas but none of it really feels like it's coalesing into a fun song. Just leaves me scratching my head.
This record makes me feel extremely nostalgic. From a Guatamelan-American artist I wasn't familiar with prior, this hit me with that same kind of indietronica, multilingual comfort I've craved ever since rinsing In The Silence by Asgeír as a teen.
Honestly, this entire thing just feels extremely washed out. Compared to other great stuff I've heard in this genre, despite the great atmosphere these tracks build, there's just this crispness lacking on a lot of the tracks. And I don't mean that in the sense that "oh everything is sludgy in a sludge metal track" I mean like, when an early Boris track lingers on a grimy bass note, I can almost feel that oozing in my skin in a way that this album just feels like it doesn't have that. ... read more
Man, the start of this album showed promise, I don't even think A-Town Girl is that bad it's honestly corny but in a fun way. The longer this thing goes on though the cheaper the beats, the worse the production gets and the less fun I have with this thing. Good Good is an honest to god jam, Risk It All is a highlight and honestly, Big is just a fun corny time but by the end of the album I'm just bored and tired.
Also, would
So, I adore this record. I think it's some of the most exquisite, glamourous indie rock and art pop I've heard in a while, but after giving a deeper listen, there's this part of me that feels like by the end of a second listen it starts to almost feel predictable. Like, of COURSE My Lady Of Mercy would have those big crunches on the chorus. Of COURSE there's a song in another language on this project. Of COURSE there's a song about gender fuckery and a queer approach to gender.
Like, I'm not ... read more
Yeah honestly, I gave this one two listens and it's just not hitting. I see her wanting to experiment with that that UK EDM House scene that's really been taking off lately but geez it just doesn't have the drive or groove to hit. Mood Swings and Far Away are probably the two songs that I can take away fairly strongly from this but they need to be given to a DJ to remix to really bring out their full potential. She just doesn't quite have the ear for this sort of vibe which sucks.
Elsy Wameyo leveled up everything that made her a promising new Australian artist on her debut EP Nilotic. God damn give this a listen if you like Little Simz or Sampa The Great
Well right off the bat this is a country album that doesn't immediately make my skin crawl so that already counts for so much. I feel like I might need to sit down with it again but there are already 3 other records that I need to give a second listen and I'm running out of time god damn. The storytelling and performances on this record are just beautiful, the title track and When the Pills Weat Off were especially highlights on my first listen. I also found the 7 minute closer a rather ... read more
I love the song third song on here, By The Way by Teenage Joans :)
This album really felt like the result of Skegss "trying" and it really shows their lack of literally any skill whatsoever. There are a few highlights on this thing like Valhalla which really lean into the pub rock thing they've got going but my god it's just a load of nothing.
While this crop of songs from Naarm/Melbourne based artist Canisha is solid, I feel like she doesn't have much of her own voice. This doesn't quite stand out in that RnB Singer-Songwriter sphere, especially with a juggernaut like Thelma Plum in the Australian scene. I also feel like the start of this album hits way stronger than the ending IDK.
I'm not entirely sure this is an album or EP but either way, what the hell is going on here on this project. The band can't keep a consistent sound across this entire album. They start with a metalcore track, go into a hardcore EDM track, go into like, some citypop type stuff and then power pop and it's like, why. This would be so much more interesting if they sat with one genre and really dug down into it but instead all the tracks on here feel like they are just less interesting versions of ... read more
These guys were featured in Triple J's 2023 First Nations acts to watch and I can definitely see why with this sound. An indie rock trio from the rural NSW, KICKED-IN BICKIE TIN's debut EP feels like it blends the sounds of acts like Sly Withers, Beddy Rays and Luca B4asi into a strong, cohesive package. While it's nothing groundbreaking, it's one of the more creative sounding albums out of the Australian indie rock scene. Could use a little more something but overall a good start from the trio.
Kirin J Callahan feels like he's making music to bring the sounds of the INXS era of Australian music to the modern day. tracks like Chop Chop, If I Could Sing and It's The Truth feel like they're taking the sound of an album like Kick and crafting a more weaving song with it. The only songs I don't like are the ones like the opening track Bread of Love, as much as I like the weird spoken word cross rap rock feature from Naeem in concept.
Also Anaemic Adonis is a hyperska track prove me wrong.
So Imma be honest, I've warmed up to Ice Spice for the most part, but IDK this song is just not doing it for me. Rhyming up 4 times, some of my least favourite parts of Ice Spice's go to lyrics, as much as I think the chorus is funny it just... yeah.
I think it's probably one of her strongest beats on a song I just feel like it's not her strongest.
Why does this go so stupid, it feels like someone listened to a screamo record, played 5 different Laur boss songs from Arcaea and then made an EP and it works disturbingly well. Also I'm absolutely obsessed with that drum tone geez.
At its best it reminds me of the warmth of a great Death Cab For Cutie track, at it's worst it's good but is a little stale.
God that room is enormous though.
My god this is a vapid album. It's like someone sucked all the soul out of a Rufus Du Sol song and then amped it up with a bunch of Imagine Dragons synths. Boring and exhausting to listen to despite not even reaching 40 minutes.
Mixing the vibes of artists like Drake, Kid Laroi and Post Malone with Reggaeton beats, this debut full length project from Creed Tha Kid suffers from a lack of energy and diversity the longer it goes on. While it starts with some energy, it just gets woozier and woozier the deeper you get into the record. When the 5th track on a 10 track album feels like it's losing steam you know something's wrong.
IDK, I feel like there are times when this album misses the mark. It's a very YMMV kind of album whether the humour of the album gets you and I feel like this album has a massive slump on tracks 4 - 6 that made me really worried. There's some really banger tracks on here as well and those outnumber the bad, but when you're making geek rock like Cheekface are, the bad tends to stick out more than the good.
Also there are times when the vocal mixing is absolute garbage, with punchlines sometimes ... read more
