This album from Naarm/Melbourne sibling duo Charm of Finches is very pretty. I think sonically I enjoy it a little more than the Last Dinner Party record from earlier this year if we're looking at Art Pop. It's my first time with the duo's music despite it being their third record. However, I think the lyricism can be the weakest aspect of this album at times. While there are some really strong tracks on this project, Human being a notable highlight about a man who wants the singer to teach ... read more
Flume - Sirens ft. Caroline Polachek (Nightcore) except that would actually be enjoyable
Okay so first of all, this is nowhere near as horrible as I was expecting based on what I sampled on release day, however I feel like this album is really starting to show the cracks in Taylor as an artist.
So let's get this out the way first. Jack Antonoff is asleep at the wheel on production at the start if this record. My god the production is so shallow and boring at times, the opening track's instruments are mixed to shit with the drums sounding like they're recorded through a wall and it ... read more
This was the first song I sampled off the record and oh my god, the lyrics are banal, the posty feature is dull and the mixing holy. The drums feel like they were recorded from another room over while the bass synth is just blaring. Genuinely a new low for Taylor.
Holy shit his dad came home with the milk to give it a rating of "umm, yeah"
I'd say overall this album is an improvement from their debut. What it trades in the standout singles of the debut like Oldboy and Rocksta it gains in a stronger foundation for the entirety of the album.
It comes out of the gate with three absolute heaters. The grimy Yao Ming probably has the best refrain of the whole tape even if it's just repeating the same thing over and over it just goes. Wire has a beat and production that feels ripped straight from a sci-fi action scene in a way that ... read more
Honestly, this manages to feel less like a disperate record of drum and bass bangers and feel like an extremely cohesive album of unique feeling that really feels all Nia Archives' own. It all just feels like an extension of herself and it's been amazing watching her grow as an artist of the last few years in this boom of drum and bass/jungle in the mainstream.
God, this EP is such a nothing project. There's nothing interesting here, nothing that gets your blood pumping, nothing that hits emotionally, no riffs that make you think "that was cool". This is just an uninteresting wall of sound that fades into the background the longer you listen to the point that you feel numb by the end. At least it's not a full album man.
Overall this album is so, so much more consistent than her debut. There's a lovely narrative here about healing and it not being a linear process and I love Marie's commitment to never letting the weird, uncomfortable or cringe thoughts in her relationships and yearning. It does create this really personal feeling at times on this album. And I don't think the fact nothing quite hits that banger level of Serotonin here is a bad thing.
Unfortunately that doesn't mean this album always hits. The ... read more
Man, it might be a bit of that overexposure making me think the song tends to be a little cringe (especially with the white VTubers look at me rap ehe stuff) but more than that I HATE THAT FUCKING BED SQUEAK SAMPLE IN LIKE EVERYTHING EXCEPT WINDOW BY STILL WOOZY BRO WHY IS THAT THE PERCUSSIVE ELEMENT OF THIS FUCKING SONG MAN I CANNOT FUCKING DO THIS MAKE IT FUCKING STOP!
So something I've learnt lately is just how hard it is to separate an artist from their main projects' work on their solo work, and I felt this a little hard on this project. While it's solid, it just feels just more straightforward in this kind of lane of experimental hip hop that Injury Reserve already lies within. I also found that a lot of material on this project just kind of reminded me of stuff I've heard from Denzel Curry projects but just not quite as interesting.
There are some ... read more
As someone who never deep dived into Daft Punk until last night, I've just listened to the big singles but oh my god my first listen to this thing is an absolute journey. I'm sure this will increase higher with more listens but god no wonder this is so highly beloved. No wonder Daft Punk is so beloved as someone who didn't really know them outside of the big singles when RAM came out. Definitely an album that I can see being a constant play for me.
ALSO FUCKING LMAO PITCHFORK A 64?
Coming back to drop a review on this with the announcement of 1300's 2nd mixtape coming out later this month. As a Korean-Australian rap collective, the announcement they were doing a wholly k-pop ep was interesting at the time but it just ended up being wholly underwhelming, neither feeling like the hammed up energy of their usual work or any interesting k-pop production was coming throuvh. Altogether the EP ended up being a forgettable side venture that doesn't even make an appearance at ... read more
Vampire Weekend did the impossible and made a good shoegaze song at the end of this album.
Okay but for real, this album feels like a natural evolution of their sound into a much more experimental sound when looking back on Father of the Bride it felt like they were really stagnating there. The singles had this combined feeling of nostalgic parts of their sounds mixed with more modern art pop soundscapes that really freshened up their sound. However the deep cuts are also extremely lovely, ... read more
An overall fun debut EP from Naaarm/Melbourne pop punk group Maizie. It feels a really nice combination of nostalgic and modern, with influnces from Aussie classic groups like The Veronicas while also having that modern Australiana post punk vibe of groups like Camp Cope. I think there are some weaker points on this thing but they definitely seem like a fun live act so hopefully I'll catch them sometime
I love everything that this album stands for, Beyonce as an artist not feeling herself restricted by genres and creating an album that definitely has a defined sound and world but never feels the need to confine itself into just being country or dance or rap or r&b. Beyonce pulls influences from so many worlds in a way that really manifests in the last leg especially.
Also her cover of Jolene is just *chef's kiss*. Taking a song about pleading with someine to not steal her man to a pure ... read more
While I don't think it's outstanding, I feel like a lot of the takes about it being boring and repetitive are kinda wild. That clave beat is a fundamental part of amapiano music and everything around it is what's changing. I do think Tyla limits herself a little in vocal deliveries and nothing quite hits the same sultry levels that Water did when it first came out, but it's a solid release overall.
Plus, it's an extremely short album which means that the beat doesn't really get the change to ... read more
