There are maybe one or two songs on this thing that don't make me laugh uncontrollably. If you don't like this album, respectfully, you have a stick up your ass and need to go outside.
Solid, loud, angry and at times had me with a stankface with the metal breakdowns. Ever track from this Naarm Melbourne band's self titled, queer punk rager is short and too the point. My biggest gripe is that the vocalist is sometimes drowning in the rest of the instruments for the sake of "punk purity" in a way that works better in a live show than on a recorded album.
This music video too is yuri.
The beat is a vibe overall, the main vocals are soothing and honestly, Calli's rap isn't over the top but more kind of 2010s pop song with rap feature but in a citypop type way on this track. It could be better but it was overall a pretty relaxing track and could have been way more egregiously bad too.
That was an hour of my life I'm not getting back
Byron Bay/Cavanbah artist Gimmy's debut album feels like this interesting mix between some Australian contemporaries like Courtney Barnett and Julia Jacklin to create this unique sound that is able to effortlessly shift across the course of the album. Will likely go back to it for another listen later.
Man, this is like that brakence album on steroids with less interesting production. It feels exhausting to listen through at times, tracks like n/A and Kool-Aid are absolutely fucking cringe and I'm half convinced the only reason that Sewerslvt dropped a project under a new alias was so that she could be credited on p.u.s.s. -e without people knowing it was her. That track is actually shit.
There are moments on here that I like, R.i.p. honestly kind of bangs even if the random Sans speaking ... read more
This short EP by Eora/Sydney outfit 2Touch is one of the most pleasant, comforting electronic EPs I've heard in a while. The entire thing feels well paced and just warm, similar to the feeling on the album cover, and I feel like they've delivered on a lovely experience on this short, 5 track project.
When I saw that E^ST had come back under the new moniker of Headaches after a long haitus, I was extremely excited to see what she had in store. She was one of the first artists I went to see live on my own, her debut album as E^ST while not perfect was something that has stuck with me as a comfort album for a long time.
However, I don't know if it's working with fellow Australian producer Golden Vessel rather than Jim Elliot but this collaborative album feels like it lacks much of a pulse in ... read more
Save me indie singer songwriters named Phoebe
Phoebe Go, the moniker of Phoebe Lou, member of Two People, the duo made up of two members of now defunct Triple J Unearthed High winners Snackadactyl has had a pretty long career in the Aussie music scene and has finally released her debut studio album after a haitus from the Two People project. Overall, I enjoy her work, it's generally strong singer-songwriter type music with elements of HAIM coming through on some tracks like Something You Were ... read more
I really, really wanted to like this album. I'm not a TØP enjoyer but Trench was a surprise of an album that I was extremely surprised by. After Scaled and Icy being a disappointment, gearing the openibg teaser straight up yell at you WELCOME BACK TO TRENCH was honestly really promising. However, the album just feels really unfocused in practice.
About half of this album is rapping which feels like by the end of the album these feel like they all blend together by the end of the album. ... read more
This EP reminds me a lot of the parts I like of artists like Flume and MØ. While it can feel a little too derivative at times of them, the sounds of the EP never quite feel like yhey're overstaying their welcome outside of on Want It Bad.
A mix of Franz Ferdinand dance punk, HMLTD art rock and Death Grips style industrial that feels like it does unfortunately end up losing some of its energy towards the end. Bork Pelly is a fucking banger though.
This album is one of those albums which I class as "the growing pains of punk ideology". It's that mixture between teen angst and the starting point of leftist ideas, where sometimes the way that things come across don't always land properly. Similar recent acts include tracks like The Linda Lindas' Resolution/Revolution where there's an idea there but it's buried under lyrics like "you don't have any takes and/your arguments are basic".
That means that sometimes these ... read more
So, I initially listened to this album on Triple J where they played the entire thing in full as a listening party with commentary from Billie Eilish's interview with Lucy Smith, something I don't think they've ever done before. But that was absolutely not the right place to listen to this record.
This album feels so, so much more intimate than either of Billie's other records from the word go, wasting no time just showing us how the way the world constantly picks at her as a celebrity image ... read more
While I think this song ends a little weaker than it starts and can wear its Halsey and Lorde influences a little too heavy on its sleeve, this is straight up one of my favourite songs of the year and I cannot get enough of it. A song about being addicted to a relationship that you know is harming you because you're putting in more than the other person, but you simply just feel better when you're around the person that you forget how draining it is, using the metaphor of cigarettes is just ... read more
Eora/Sydney based artist CXLOE is one of those artists who I've found constantly rides the border of good but not great for me, and her debut self-released album hasn't really changed much for me. Overall, an album made up of dark pop songs with topics ranging from struggling with anxiety to how being a perfectionist makes her struggle to be happy with her own work, this album can be deeply personal for CXLOE. However, I feel like if you've heard the singles leading up to this album, Flight ... read more
GIRL EDM!!!
I feel like this is the most in her element Darkinjung/Central Coast NSW artist NINAJIRACHI has ever been on a project, making full on glitchy bangers from front to back.
From the opening title track that feels like it's innovating and doubling down on the parts of Porter Robinson's Worlds that sit strongest in the nostalgia of fans, the driving 2010s glam pop production elements of Ice You Out with long time collaborator Kota Banks, the atmospheric production on Hand on My Heart ... read more
Northeast Party House are an Australian electronic duo out of Naarm/Melbourne whose main claim to fame is how many times they've just barely missed out on the Hottest 100. Constantly appearing in the 200 - 101 list the day after the main countdown, it's almost a running joke at this point that they're a Hottest 200 mainstay. And honestly, I can kind of see why. While they have bangers here or there, tracks like Dominoes in the past were strong tracks, they often tend to lack the identity to ... read more
I've been a huge fan of Forest Claudette up till this point. The Year of February was one of my favourite EPs when it released and I'm still malding over the fact that I missed getting the RSD vinyl of it when it dropped. I enjoyed a decent bit of Everything Was Green...
However, I can't get into this new era of Forest Claudette. They dropped Kobe Beef around the start of this year and there was just something about the chorus that felt really annoying that made me unable to get around it. ... read more
My god this album is fucking annoying. Tracks like Psylocybae going on forever, the annoying vocal effects on tracks like Little Foot Big Foot and the new version of Time, which was the only song I already knew off this album prior and is honestly worse now, the barebones African RnB influences on the closing tracks and just general messy ideas. This record often feels like it's putting on the veneer of what it thinks makes a good album and instead just being outright annoying to listen ... read more
