LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
98

The context surrounding this record definitely isn't one that all of us have experienced, but it isn't hard to imagine how difficult a time we'd have if it happened in our lives. Losing someone who, by all accounts, was a fundamental force in getting LCD Soundsystem to become the name in dance music they are today must be an indescribably disheartening experience. That, along with the aversion to the limelight that James Murphy still seems to be experiencing today. 'Sound of Silver' is every ... read more

Ween - GodWeenSatan: The Oneness

So.
Ween.

This was not a great first listen. The only track I liked was 'Bumblebee' and even then, it wasn't particularly strong. Then I got to 'Nicole' and turned it off. The wildly harsh production was driving me insane, the songs felt insubstantial and WAY too weird, just a lot of bad vibes. Fast forward nearly 6 months, and I return with the context of their future career under my belt and it all clicks. For an album that was written between the ages of 14 and 20 ... read more

JAY-Z - The Blueprint

Definitely didn't rush to relisten to this just because of the anniversary rolling around. One of those album covers that perfectly captures the essence of the music. Effortlessly entertaining, with some of the most consistently triumphant beats and flows in hip-hop history. Having two of the greatest 3-song runs of any rap album is fucking amazing as well, with 8-10 maybe being the best of that entire year. His best album.

Paul McCartney & Linda McCartney - Ram
97

The greatest solo Beatle album, no question. Concerned only with fun, wacky ideas, and creating some of the greatest blends of pop, baroque, and folk into what has correctly been described as the first indie pop album ever made. It stinks it was so misunderstood upon release, even by the other former Beatles, but we still have this album now, so who really cares? 'Too Many People' is Paul channeling John in the most "Hold my beer" way imaginable, and goddamn is it good. ... read more

John Lennon - Imagine
85

John's first two solo albums really seem to embody the man in a very sobering, holistic manner. "Plastic Ono Band" are the ugliest sides of a troubled man working to excise what he found to be the worst parts of himself, whilst 'Imagine' is a heady set of mantric musings on the things that helped make John the man he was. It's in a lot of the seeming contradictions of John as a person that creates the drama that makes this as interesting as it is. On a track by ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
83

I absolutely agree that this is Sufjan's first brush with greatness, but I absolutely disagree that it stands in the shadow of "Illinois". There's almost nothing comparable between the essence of each project individually. This album gains its gargantuan emotional impact from remembering tiny moments between people, places and the relationships between them. It thrives off the qualities of a place rather than just being in the place itself. The scope is smaller, but that ... read more
