Has some standout moments but overall ends up blending in with itself a little too much. Musical passages are often repetitive and not particularly interesting.
I love singer-songwriter music that feels really specific and tied to a particular person's story, and, since Whitney is a poet, it only makes sense that she excels at this.
I cried a bit at a couple of songs on this album, which automatically takes the score I give it up significantly. The writing on this is gorgeous, the production is spacy and atmospheric in a really tender way. Mori continues to only improve as one of my favorites in the modern singer-songwriter scene
Finally able to log this one from last year, one of my favorite EPs of the year, some super gentle singer-songwriter tracks with incredibly cutting lyricism
I am lost. I am truly baffled when it comes to Taylor Swift. Every time I think I have a read on her, she throws in another twist that I had no way of expecting. Is that a good thing? No, not in this case.
"The Life of a Showgirl" is, simply put, a mess. A lot of the elements are extremely confusing, and a lot of the tracks feel like they were plucked from completely different albums from one another. It's not a very cohesive record, and it feels like it starts to drag a little ... read more
What. The. Fuck.
Young Thug has lost the plot. I already suspected this from the bizarre whitified album cover, but the music behind that atrocity didn't end up being much better. Repetitive beats, irritating vocal inflections and processing, laughably bad bars (INCLUDING TWO SEPARATE INSTANCES OF REFERENCING A GIRL WHO IS IN SCHOOL/CLASSES, bro learned too much from Drake)...there really isn't anything to take away from this project. Oh, and it's over an hour long, and the last ... read more
Initially significantly underrated this silky smooth pop soul record made with a tangible adoration for the art of making music, with supremely charming writing and fantastic vocals. It is just so warm, and made with such a wide, kind smile woven into the very fabric of the music on it, that it is impossible not to love. The Art Of Loving knows just that, and employs it very well to make itself supremely loveable and compelling.
My introduction to slacker rock was last year's solo album by Wednesday member MJ Lenderman. And, since I loved that album, it only makes sense for me to love this, too - there's a lot of the same spirit here, with the same slightly dirty and raw instrumental style, witty writing and some genuinely emotional moments.
I am the world's biggest Bright Eyes glazer and I am not remotely ashamed of it. This is a great EP with some new sounds and some typically amazing songwriting from Conor Oberst.
Very solid EP which I stumbled across essentially by total coincidence but I'm happy I did. The title track is especially amazing.
What a beautiful, touching, devastating debut. Arm's Length are one of the most authentically emotionally intelligent bands in the genre, and maybe generally out right now.
Beautifully produced project with super captivating atmosphere and very nice vocals too. Got ghosted by the person who recommended me this unfortunately but hey at least the album's great.
Very impressive body of work if maybe slightly overrated here on AOTY but I understand that because it's an incredibly AOTY-core type of project. Nonetheless, the brass work is incredible, the lyrics are spectacularly good, and the structural choices are weird and all over the place but in an extremely compelling way.
Decent enough but ultimately not too memorable. Kenny oughta call up Travis Barker again because their collaborative mixtape remains his most interesting work.
A bit too long and kind of same-y in a lot of places, but there are some very fun moments.
Couple of great additions. Lockdown could've been 5-6 minutes shorter, but musically they're great.
Finneas and Ashe work together very well on this, their voices combine super well. The production is smooth and gentle. It's, at its core, such an autumn record, that is absolutely perfect for this time of year. Fantastically done.
Honestly this is better than I expected with the lineup change. Some really wild tracks on here in a pleasant mix with some super catchy hooks. Rain is the main highlight for me but there's plenty to enjoy here
