Courting - Lust for Life, Or: How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story
72

This felt a bit like it had 2 intros then 6 songs I enjoyed, yet in totality it felt lacking. There were definitely cool ideas on here but they were a bit underdeveloped as a whole project. But I did still find this more immediately rewarding than their last.

Peach Pit - Magpie
85

Peach Pit have been what I would call my favorite band for some years now. This album finds the band refining everything on From 2 to 3 with some combination of their previous sounds. Chris, as per usual, shines here with great guitar work, especially on moments such as the solos of Yasmina and Magpie but also in the regular lead parts on many songs. I also found myself really enjoying the softer moments on songs such as Did You Love Somebody and Neil's writing across the album.

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION - ソルファ (2016) [Sol-Fa (2016)]

Fun Fact: Hitori Gotoh, *the* Bocchi the Rock, was named after Masafumi Gotoh, the singer of this band.

It is a great J-rock album, if not a peak of this specific sound within the genre. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to get into the genre. I know people tend to look at some Japanese groups as just “anime music” but that is really just unfair. There is so much more to so many of these bands. Ones like Asian Kung-Fu Generation really bleed passion into their music. To ... read more

Horsegirl - Versions of Modern Performance
78

Whilst only discovering Horsegirl on May 14, I plan to follow them closely. The first song I heard, “Anti-Glory”, instantly stuck with me due to its entrancing drums, filling guitar tones, and lush production. After that I continued my regular music activities until a few weeks later I realized at midnight that the album had been released and I went right to listen to it.
The album starts with the pounding drums of the previously mentioned “Anti-glory” which is both a ... read more

V more like I like guitar

Whilst a more ambient project than Codas, S/H/A/P/E/L/E/S/S provides solid production throughout and some interesting parts for each song. My issues come more from my general mood towards ambient music. Some cuts in songs are a bit odd, such as in III, and the EP could definitely benefit from more transitions in and out of each song such as I to II. I think that perhaps the songs were too similar for me as well. My favorite moments come from the bubble effects in I ... read more
