Quadeca - Dark Magic
90

His best pop song, and it’s not close for me. I love this direction. Nice to have something layered, and still thoughtful the way Quadeca is—but also light, fun, catchy.

Ed O'Brien - Blue Morpho
90

Just stunning. You can really tell listening to this how undeniable Ed’s ear for atmosphere and musical progression is. The composition weaves in and out of peaks and valleys; huge swells and subtle blips. My favorite track I’ve heard from him, easily. Bravo

People In The Daytime - We Can Give You Special Powers
85

One of the most unique, sonically captivating and great performers I’ve had the pleasure of playing on a bill with. My only issue with this record is that it’s too short, but every song is so meticulously crafted and impactful that the concept of the album comes across probably in part due to it. I’m so excited to see these guys hit it big soon.

Tame Impala - Loser
55

Sonically and songwriting-wise very underwhelming to me. Kevin doesn’t take the initial idea anywhere interested or rewarding. I did actually enjoy End of Summer for what it’s worth—sadly I found it hard to want to pay attention to this new one.

Tame Impala - End Of Summer

This one grew on me a lot! The synth work is honestly really cool to listen to, especially as a big fan of techno/electronica/house. It isn’t necessarily what I wanted out of the first lead single off Kevin’s next record, but I can’t deny it being a pretty good listen. The song does meander, but at points it only ever gets a slightly disinteresting; which is better than it being bad.

Sabrina Carpenter - Man's Best Friend
60

Fun pop tunes watered down by oversaturated radio-friendly production, songwriting tropes and an overall shtick that has worn thin.

Geese - 100 Horses
100

100 Horses of influences running throughout this one. Geese do a fantastic job at using their collective foundation under their love for the band Television, but man, I love all the other bits I’m picking up. Maybe the best single so far.

Mac DeMarco - Guitar
65

Haunting, tender and soothing; but also oftentimes blurry and undefined.

I’ve admired Mac’s sonic palette, voice and songwriting for quite some time—it fits a particular niche within my rotation, especially when I need to unwind. A handful of tracks off of his last fully fledged record, “Here Comes the Cowboy”, I’ve been playing for this reason: despite the underwhelming timbre of that record. This album has a similar problem, though it’s occasionally ... read more

Racing Mount Pleasant - Racing Mount Pleasant

An attempt to say much more than you really have to say.

I feel these tunes could’ve come out so much better as just instrumentals. From the jump, I’m bombarded with so much bravado that I have zero clue what the identity of this band is or what this album wants to convey. The Black Country, New Road influence is undeniable from the jump… but here, it feels like a formula rather than an expression. The immaculate climax of “Emily” is sadly watered down by ... read more

Racing Mount Pleasant - Call It Easy

The instrumental is incredible and has a ton of emotion in it, but I feel more lukewarm about some things regarding this song than others it seems like. I don’t particularly enjoy the singing or melody of this song. It feels like the song gets huge and into this emotional apex before it had time to grasp its claws into anything. I guess I would say the vocals just sort of feel nondescript to me? I also honestly really don’t enjoy how the chorus is phrased; “call it easy call ... read more

Chappell Roan - The Subway
100

Alongside GLB, one of the best modern pop-songs I’ve heard. Discernibly inspired by the likes of Cocteau Twins (whom I have a very big soft spot for) and still infused with her Kate Bush-esque sensibilities.

I really, really hope that she’s not going to wait five years to drop a new album, because this track and GLB deserve to be on an album together. I’d love to hear a new Chappell Roan record with this sort of dream-pop inspired sound throughout.

Geese - Trinidad
92

Freaky Geese are back with this one! 😛

Everything is so off-kilter—from the scrappy production, the sizzling guitars and Cameron’s crooning vocals. There is this underlying blues element to this song that makes it really stand out, especially the vocal melody. I like how the softer sections of this track turned out compared to how they played it live. The horns add so much flavor and depth. That really strange riff that Emily plays turns out much better here with how it was ... read more

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper

I finished the album movie thinking to myself “it wasn’t THAT good, was it?” I then went to the album release on streaming and went down the track list. It really was that damn good. Oh my god.

Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz

Forgot to rate this project. Loved it. Full review at some point maybe.

Tyler, The Creator - DON'T TAP THE GLASS
79

Easily his most inspired and unique record since IGOR; and because of it, the best since. CHROMAKOPIA had me feeling quite frustrated with Tyler’s lack of inventiveness since the Call Me If You Get Lost era started. I had plenty of fun with that record, but the feeling that Tyler was just doing a lot of the same tricks was rearing its head. That feeling was full force on his last record. Even within tracks like NOID (featuring a new sonic direction) he still managed to spam major 7th ... read more

Alex G - Headlights

A pretty good album by Mr. Alex G here. Some songs are more remarkable than others, but overall, it's a very pleasant listen. It's missing some zaniness; some of those bells and whistles that are deeply ingrained in the rest of his catalogue. I also feel like he isn't playing to his strengths as a songwriter at times.

However, everything still flows and functions very well. There isn't anything I could say is particularly offensive. The biggest crime this album makes is ... read more

青葉市子 [Ichiko Aoba] - Luminescent Creatures
84

It doesn't quite reach the same highs as her last album, but it still manages to create a unique and memorable, self-contained world. There are still plenty of ethereal, ambient moments interspersed throughout⎯though I find everything to be a lot more "immediate," and shorter for what I would typically expect out of her. It should be evident then that it is a fraction as challenging as her magnum opus, "0"; and much less frigid than "Windswept Adan." With ... read more

Geese - Taxes
95

Goddamn. What a song!

I had the pleasure of hearing this song live when I saw them at my local venue, The Burl, early this year. I loved it then, but the production really takes everything to a whole new level here. There’s an airiness and earnestness to this sound that we haven’t really heard from them yet. On top of this, I find the visual concept of this upcoming record and song to be their strongest yet.

At every turn of the sound and visual aspect there is something beneath ... read more

The Velvet Sundown - Floating on Echoes

As someone who has been writing and publishing music for the last 8 years, and understanding how HARD it is to break through a barrier of ears to your music, this is the most offensive and fuck you thing the music industry / Spotify has ever conceived (somehow, they keep outdoing their evilness). 400k monthly listeners (maybe most of that is generated listeners too) for entirely AI generated, lazy prompt written slop is insulting. In my local scene, there are dozens and dozens of songwriters ... read more

Animal Collective - Love On the Big Screen
97

Straight up the best single they’ve dropped in over a decade, it’s not hyperbole. There’s a classic Animal Collective essence to this track I haven’t heard since their late 2000’s / early 2010’s (sort of) output. Holy shit

We are so back!!

"@wizxrd reducing every artistic gesture to a product of commodification is stripping art of the humanity you claim it’s missing, and that’s the real tragedy. Framing your own disengagement as proof of that system is a lazy way to universalize a personal reaction."
On wizxrd's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"I fail to see how it’s Quadeca’s fault that listeners are projecting these expectations of soul, authenticity or a blueprint of musically emoting “the real way”. The tropes you assign as “western music” tropes are not inherently formulaic. I believe people construct this idea of the artist’s intent in their head due to the tiring nature of art discourse in the age of social media (especially this decade), and project that onto that artist. Quadeca has talked genuinely about what in his mind makes music “good” or exciting to and strives for that in his own; as an artist, this is the ultimate goal and inspiration. I find no fault in that. You don’t have to enjoy it, but I feel a lot of your judgement is clouded by the commodification of art."
On OgPietroo's review of Geese - Getting Killed
"Just because you think it’s mediocre does not make it a phenomenon for people to boost “mediocre “ albums whenever they mix genres. This record is by and large a rock album with some unique flavors, but it doesn’t necessarily slap you over the head with a mixture of genres."

"I don’t recall where the band is “basically okay” with what’s happening in Palestine. You are flattening their stance on it. If we really want to make progress and offer aid, we gotta stop being so absolutist; I see far too many spending all their energy on that and none on actually making a difference."

"@Banner well put!"
On Banner's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"@Banner I get that. There’s certainly a large amount of parasocial fans of his, it’s a shame that it affects the art though. I think part of the problem with the discourse is that it’s just so extreme. I rated it a perfect score because I enjoyed it that much—but with those reviews/scores you’ll hear takes about it being the best AOT, AOD, etc. then on the flip side, I’ve seen a lot of push back and very very low scores with the common take being overrated and shouldn’t be enjoyed as much as it is. Those clash pretty hard. I think if people were more personal with their reviews and reasonings in those reviews, we would see less of that. We need this site to practice “I” statements lol."
On Banner's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"@Banner I get that for sure. I don’t personally have that feeling when I hear it; his last full length was such a unique pocket of music I had never heard before when I discovered it, and I’m a big fan of folktronica, for example. I can understand how that feeling would pervade though, and my theory is that for some it’s especially pronounced because of how maximalist it gets. It’s quite indulgent in the production quirks, bells and whistles of “acclaimed” internet music."
On Banner's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"I don’t really understand the RYM/AOTY criticism and I keep it seeing it. I’m genuinely just trying to understand…is there any evidence to suggest that he’s trying to cater towards some audience? Or is it just that he’s a got a sonic identity that aligns itself with other “critical”/indie/AOTY darlings like The Microphones/Folktronica outfits (Mid-Air Thief comes to mind), etc.? Because I find it quite unfair if it’s just this conjecture"
On personguy's review of Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
"@personguy no of course! Wasn’t insinuating that. I’m always just cautious of music discourse that involves a similar sentiment to “other people really like/dislike this, I feel the opposite and I don’t know why others are disagreeing.” Your review wasn’t particularly that exact example, but your opening sentences may imply that even if it wasn’t your intention."

"@Lord0fDiamonds you’re once again inflating what I’m saying. I wasn’t attacking or judging their character at all. I was telling you how the tone of this review came across and why I don’t vibe with it. If someone’s critique comes across like they're flaunting their taste as superior while trashing people who feel differently, it’s fair to call that out. It's not about censoring feelings—it’s about recognizing when someone's sharing turns into sneering. They could’ve made a long post about all the things they hated in the song personally. When you start injecting “people shouldn’t like this because I dislike this about it” is when you start veering towards performative elitism instead of genuine critique."
On cappyk's review of Wednesday - Elderberry Wine
"@cappyk that would’ve been a more valid use of your review space to express specifically the parts of the songs that made you personally angry / that you disliked, rather."
On cappyk's review of Wednesday - Elderberry Wine
"@Lord0fDiamonds I did not take the review as an attack, but good job putting words in my mouth. I just don’t think the review was fair in the way it was positioning OP as having superior taste for disliking it. I equally hate when people act that way when liking things, too. They’re free to express their opinions, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t being an ass hat for implying that people dumb / not as musically intelligent like them for liking it. If I disliked the song, I would’ve left the same comment. Ciao."
