Niall Horan seems to return to his One Direction roots on “Dinner Party” but in a more mature, Niall Horan as a soloist kind of way.
Not one song on this album is bad, boring, or lacklustre. If anything, the album is an easy listen. It’s got motion, its got rhythm, production is clean, lyrics are nice, but where these things make the album a strong album, they also don’t do much for it either. Not one part of me listening to this album thought that there was anything ... read more
Lizzo’s “BITCH” isn’t the show stopper that she thinks it is. The real question amongst the release of this album is, what happened to Lizzo?
I understand the controversies that happened with Lizzo in recent years but were they that bad to hinder her from making the feel good, confident pop music that, despite how much we loved or loathed it, we couldn’t get out of our heads? This album is full of ideas that just were not executed with the finesse and the glitter ... read more
So I guess this is Kim’s debut album since stepping away from her previous label, allowing her to enter a new creative space and release music that she fills is more moulded to her artistry, at least from what I understand of it.
I will start off by saying that although it is pleasing for an artist to break the 4th wall and get into a space where they can create space for their own domain, this album just doesn’t showcase Kim’s ability to create music that is daring and ... read more
The second instalment from Labrinth’s “COSMIC OPERA” series is a more solid and cohesive body of work in comparison to the first, however the question still stands of, what is it really for?
My first guess, now having experienced both acts, is that this is an artistic explosion of Labrinth. I’m guessing that Labrinth has wanted to release a multitude of different genre-bending creative takes and perhaps certain music industry suits has tried to keep the lid on the box ... read more
“Big Mama” sees the final send off (at least for now) to Latto. After her global success of “Big Energy” which later featured Mariah Carey, Latto gained global success on a few more hits later on in her career. Now, after giving birth, Latto announced that “Big Mama” would he her retirement album.
So, about the album… I’m going to be honest. I don’t look at Latto as an artist and think she’s anything amazing. She has a couple of ... read more
Truthfully, I’m unsure what to put here.
Slapping 3 tracks onto an album, and basically re-releasing the album a month later isn’t really any ground to create hype just to slap ‘deluxe’ on it.
Well, the 3 extra tracks are nothing special. They don’t give the album a new lease of life, they do not offer anything new or different to the album at all. 2 of the tracks sound like unfinished demos that just so happen to have found their way onto this so called ... read more
6LACK’s latest offering seems to come in a form of calm, peace and love; something that isn’t new to the artist, but this time around, seems fresh.
“Love Is The New Gangsta” takes a little side step away from his previous album, “Since I Have A Lover”. The previous felt a little mediocre, very run of the mill, expected etc. however this album isn’t too far fetched or unexpected from 6LACK yet it feels there is something worth listening to. Beyond the ... read more
Maluma’s keenness to show off his more traditionally Colombian roots on this album could not have come at a worse time in his career.
Maluma has proven to be a tour de force when it comes to Latin music and is of course one of the biggest names in Latin music currently. However, this is all due to the attention that has been garnered via his more huge Reggaeton smashes over the last ten years. This is a complete side step, and whilst of course this tends to happen with big artists, it ... read more
Honestly, “ICEMAN” could have been a solo release. The necessity to release the other two albums were actually not needed. I feel like they dampened a lot of the potentiality of this album taking away any authenticity, imagery and/or identity behind this album alone, seeming as this was at the forefront of the hype of a Drake release. However, in saying that, this album is of course the best of the 3. It is what is closest to Drake as Drake can get nowadays. The disappointing thing ... read more
The second (or is it first? or is it third?) of the triple album release from Drake is, well, boring.
Again, much like “MAID OF HONOUR”, lyrically, the album is unoriginal, uninspiring, and lazy. There is virtually no message to the album as a whole, or really to any track that hasn’t been portrayed in another Drake album or track.
The album is very underwhelming in production. It feels cheap, rushed, and also quite inane. The album isn’t really carried by anything ... read more
Out of the 3 albums Drake has dropped this year (so far), this was the first album that I listened to. At this point, I’m starting to wonder whether Drake is even entitled to even be part of any conversation in music at this moment in time. My understanding of this album is that this is clearly some sort of experimental take in his discography, but I must say, that his past 3/4 albums have been at that angle to some degree and all of them really fell flat like a lead balloon. This album ... read more
“locket” was one of the first album releases of the year that could have had any conversation, but I guess it didn’t, and for obvious reasons. It really is just a “My Everything” doppelgänger and it doesn’t seem to have much personality to it, despite having a couple of decent tracks to it. A deluxe, in my opinion, really wasn’t needed. For the sake of basically 3 tracks that further prove this Ariana Grande cosplay, it really didn’t give the ... read more
“M$NEY” is an album full of something and nothing. It has all the ingredients to be a great Afrobeats album, but no chef.
Asake is known for his profound lyricism and great productions in his music, but this album lacks a lot of what gives Afrobeats the soul. It starts off quite strong, but the more you delve into the album, the more you realise that the album is carried heavily by production, and even then, halfway through it becomes repetitive and actually, kind of boring. ... read more
“Middle of Nowhere” is a return to form for Kacey Musgraves. Her sixth studio album has proved to be an easy listen, with just a few minor bumps in the road.
Maybe it’s just me but I feel country music has a seriousness to it, or perhaps it’s the ideology behind country music that has a sinister angle behind it. Kacey Musgraves is a breath of fresh air within the country genre. She makes listening to country music feel care free, and non-judgmental. She explores and ... read more
“ITS BEEN AWFUL” is perhaps Isaiah Rashad’s most mature album to date. 4 years since his previous, fans have long awaited for a new LP from the rapper and it has proven to be worth the wait, offering a new angle from Isaiah’s lyricism and artistic development.
Despite the artistic growth, the album lacks any development throughout and a lot of the album sounds like it is produced as one long track, just multiple verses and hooks. The album feels a little bloated, and ... read more
Sporty Spice is very much alive and kicking.
For someone who is nearing 3 decades in releasing music, “Sweat” is as fresh as what it would be if it was an artist who is only 3 years into their career. It’s an album that’s primed and ready to go, blasting through your headphones as you tackle the gym. It’s a true testament to Mel C’s Spice Girl ego. It’s an adrenaline pumped album full of dance-pop treats, with the tempo set just perfectly to keep you ... read more
It’s no doubt that Zara Larsson is having yet another peak in her career with her “Midnight Summer” era. It seems like she is everywhere at the moment, and everything she seems to touch just turns into gold. The remix release of that very same album titled “Midnight Sun: Girls Trip” has it’s golden moments, but isn’t the whole bar.
My initial reaction to “Midnight Sun” was summed up by feeling that the album didn’t push the ... read more
“The Great Divide” is an album that on reflection appears overzealous and bloated. It seems to be a continuation of “Stick Season”, Kahan’s breakthrough 2022 album, and despite being released 4 years later, this project doesn’t appear to differ much from the former.
It’s an album that has a lot to say. It’s written from a place of love and wanting, and it’s a homely, warm, comforting album. That’s something Noah can objectively claim ... read more
With the initial offerings of this album, it seemed to be an album that could have brought back the true essence of R&B. An album that really shines light on what is an incredible, intimate genre. However, “Folded” is as close to the magic of R&B in all it’s glory that really stands out on this self titled LP from Kehlani.
I admit I am a Kehlani fan. Her music just has a way of nabbing your attention and connecting to it, making you feel apart of it, but it comes in ... read more
In my initial review of “It’s Not That Deep” I homed in on the fact that I felt that Demi seems to jump on whatever is currently popular within the music sphere. The deluxe version of the same album still leaves me with that impression, however, I feel the extra added songs have a lot more personality to them than the original tracks. They have more identity, and whilst I believe the additional tracks do not match the identity of Demi Lovato and her artistry, I do believe she ... read more
