This might be the album of the year. This album is astoundingly catchy, incredibly eclectic, completely bizarre, wholly fantastical, and yet absolutely beautiful. Magdalena Bay in their sophomore album have managed to contextualize the moods, aesthetics, and anxieties of the digital age to tell a timeless story of metamorphoses and a journey to self-love. While a very pleasant and welcome surprise for The Smile to release two albums in one year, I have to unfortunately say that this latter output is somewhat lacking in comparison. Cutouts feels like exactly what the title implies, a bunch of cutouts. Or rather, unfinished songs that don’t live up to the polish and cohesion of The Smile’s past projects – like leftovers from Wall of Eyes or A Light for Attracting Attention. What I can say is that it really feels like the band had ... read more
