Joey Valence & Brae - HYPERYOUTH
88

Not really a single lowlight on the album. It's loud and abrasive, but sometimes there's a somber moment of reflection that speaks to the album's thesis. Growing up can be very scary, which is a sentiment most people share or have shared before. The 2000s techno/disco vibes accentuate the fear of growing up and changing. Joey and Brae bring equally high energy and fun bars that are so much fun; this only heightens the incredible production. The beats all capture such nostalgic ... read more

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
82

Dio's vocals are always good, but this album isn't very Sabbathy. I get why some wouldn't like the vocalist change; I think it was much needed. It's a very 80s album, and I think there is a lot of fun to be had. Some of the songs are epic; some are just plain fun. Not much to complain about but it doesn't reach the greatness of those early Ozzy albums.

Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist - Alfredo
87

Both are amazing, but I found alfredo better than its older brother. A lot of the samples are classic smooth Alchemist, but there's a layer of grit that isn't present in Alfredo 2. Some songs sound dark, gritty, and even spooky. There just isn't a standout lesser track either. Consistently good and consistently interesting. I think Freddie and Al both reach beyond their already impressive quality to elevate each other to new heights. Freddie shows some of his best flows, and Al ... read more

Drake - Take Care
78

For not knowing anything about Drake, I thought this was pretty hot. There are a couple sleepers, but it's overall pretty consistent. He's got a good singing voice and some solid bars. Perfect moody Autumn album.

JAY-Z & Kanye West - Watch the Throne
78

I think it's a lot better than most people give it credit for. Kanye's transition to the 2010s was surprisingly smooth with some songs with dubstep-type drops, some with typical sample chops, some with an all-encompassing electronic smoothness. At times it exudes braggadocios confidence; other times it's all about Jay and Ye's feelings about family and the state of the world. Given how Ye has been moving lately, it's probably a lot more bullshit than I initially ... read more

Larry June - Life Is Beautiful
65

Al is carrying heavy here. His beats are good as always, but some less so. 2 Chainz fits the chill luxurious vibe more than I would have expected. He doesn't do anything crazy, but it's pretty ok. Larry June is so so so boring. This is all I've heard from him so maybe this is just a bad example, but he really sucks on this album. 2 Chainz has some fine verses and fine choruses. Like I said, Alchemist carries this project insanely hard. If everyone put a little more in this ... read more

billy woods - GOLLIWOG
90

The use of horror themes to accentuate the pessimism and traumatized melancholy is so creative and I love it. The production is partially horror inspired, but it is sometimes jazzy too. The longer the album goes, the songs get slower and more depressing sound-wise; some of the songs had me really emotional. Behind all of the creative masking are stories of trauma with no reprieve. The only found remedies (women, smoking, etc.) are very temporary which enforces total hopelessness and pessimism. ... read more

Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD
70

It's definitely a good album, but it feels like the commercialization of Travis' style. Even though the music mostly sounds good (some of it is amazing) it just doesn't feel the same. I have no concrete reasoning for it; it just feels like its aim was to appear more mainstream and it really grosses me out. I don't have a concrete way to describe this feeling, but it arises every time I've relistened to this album. Rodeo really was lightning in a bottle, and he still has ... read more

Freddie Gibbs - Alfredo 2
80

Two icons doing what they do best. Al's production is lush, catchy, and samey. Most beats are good, but they really blend together too much for me. Percussion is basically the same rhythm every time, and there are some pretty chords added on top. It's business as usual for Al. Same old for Freddie too. Same flows he's been doing since the 2010s which are good but samey. My biggest problem with this album is just that it's the same thing Freddie and Al have been doing since ... read more

Static-X - Wisconsin Death Trip
87

Excellent belting vocals and heavy industrial soundscapes. It doesn't let up until the very last song, and it's a really great time.

61

It's solid and shows promise, but nothing crazy. Their full LP makes this look pretty lackluster.

Party Cannon - Partied in Half
40

Awesome cover, average slam.

74

Very creative slam project. It does last a little longer than it deserves, but I don't really care. It's super fun to listen to, and many tracks feature some form of genre blending that make those songs refreshing. Parody or not, it's better than a lot of the actual genre.

Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe: 13 Tales of Cadaverous Cavorting Inside the Spookshow International
85

HALLOWEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!! I love the horror movie homages in the production. The songs are so much fun, and some are really heavy. Rob always holds a special place in my heart, and this is the quintessential Halloween album.

Black Sabbath - Born Again
34

I actually like the baby cover. That's about the only good thing about it. Everybody has already said how shitty the mixing is, and it really is bad. Vol. 4 had a distinct muddiness, but every detail still came through the mix. On this mf? It just sounds bad. The drumming barely comes through at all. It's just not very good. Songs are way too long with very little to offer. But I gotta get to the elephant in the room: Ian Gillan. I'm really not even the biggest raspy/reinforced ... read more

Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
85

These guys are awesome and could've been one of the biggest if they weren't held back by the label and if their bassist didn't pass. What a shame; this album is stellar.

Tyler, The Creator - Cherry Bomb
67

This album has the skeleton of a great album, but its experimentation is its biggest strength and flaw. Some of these songs are gold, but some are doodoo butt. It has the synthy lush sound that his later projects would perfect, but they're still pretty unrefined on here. That being said, it has some essential tracks that a Tyler fan should know. It's not the best, but it's very important in the grand scheme.

Black Sabbath - Never Say Die!
53

It is very far from their best, but I really like some of the songs on here. Unfortunately, the back half other than Air Dance is mostly sleepers. There is some quality here, but only enough to put it very slightly above average.

EDIT: The more I listen to it, the less I like it. It's so weirdly muddy and Ozzy's vocals are way too low in the mix; he has very little presence on many songs. Riffing is mostly decent but simple. Most songs go on way too long for what little they bring. ... read more

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
92

Lush, gorgeous, and consistently catchy. They really did go out with a bang; this album is near perfect. It's the pinnacle of their sound that has been evolving since they started in the 90s. Maaaaaybe just cut like a song. I don't really love Doin' It Right or Within that much, and 74 minutes is a pretty lengthy time. Not enough to hold it back much because those songs are still solid and keep the album's momentum going. I had a lot of fun listening to this album; Instant ... read more
