so much of this makes me want to tear up. I grew up with nothing but salsa music playing in my household. I'm obsessed with benito's determination to bring salsa to the mainstream. I'm in awe with the way he manages to meld it with reggaeton and latin pop. it all feels like a sonic representation of the latin diaspora. definitely coming back this again and again.

gorgeous production with hauntingly beautiful lyrical storytelling. ethel cain has created an atmostpheric soundscape here I am unwilling and unable to escape.

stand out faves: hard times, thoroughfare, gibson girl, ptolemaea (arguably a masterpiece)

hes better at weird than generic

regardless of my thoughts on the consistency of this album as a whole, it is clear ryan is a MAMMOTHLY good lyricist. very few times I can think of in the past where I had to pause a song and marvel at the line I just heard. and i did it several times on this album.
he clearly has a lot of good ideas. and not all of them pan out to their fullest potential imo (”white teeth” comes to mind). when they do though it fucking HITS (”andromeda”, “hunter”)
