songs in red and gray is in a similar position to days of open hand in suzanne vega's discography.. i think it's still great as all hell, but it's also kind of forgettable in my opinion and kind of suffers as a result.
nine objects of desire is yet another switch-up in suzanne vega's sound, instead being much more mellow and romantic, to some extent, and its much more pronounced jazz influences are welcome additions to her music. "caramel," "stockings," "world before columbus," it's all great.
99.9 F is definitely a great change of pace from suzanne vega's previous world, and it's one of the most engaging albums i've listened to in a long while. i absolutely love the energy surrounding songs like "in liverpool," "fat man and dancing girl," and "(if you were) in my movie," and the rest of it holds up super well too.
if anything, days of open hand is hella consistent, although it has pretty much the same strengths as vega's other albums and kind of gets lost in the mix.
solitude standing expands on suzanne vega's strengths and results in a consistently good album with a more mature sound than her debut. "luka," "night vision," "solitude standing," and "language" are standouts.
even on her debut, suzanne vega's skill as a songwriter is super apparent, although her sound isn't really as interesting as her later work.
i don't even know what it is about kiss me once that turns me off so much, since i love some of its songs at their cores like "million miles," "i was gonna cancel," "sexercise," and "les sex," but they don't feel like they're placed in the right context, like, at all. this album is way too noisy (not in a good way!) and obnoxious for me to vibe with it.
i'm really not that big on greatest hits albums and stuff like that, but hearing kylie's reorchestrated like this is just pure bliss. i like some of these covers even more than the originals!! a mid 9 is probably way too high for something like this but i don't care, i enjoyed it a whole lot.
x isn't as experimental as impossible princess, as comforting as fever, or as sensual as body language, but i still think that it manages to take the best elements of each of those albums and turn them into another very good pop record. "in my arms," "heart beat rock," "the one," "stars," and "nu-di-ty" are all super good examples of this, and they really are the backbone of this album.
i'm not really surprised that body language is a much more sensual album than what i'm used to from kylie, but i am surprised at just how consistent and quality it is.. like there is no weak point on here, just high after high (and then a plateau but . okay), with "secret (take you home)," "promises," and "red blooded woman" really standing out.
taking in a more disco-y sound, kylie's light years is decently enjoyable but it doesn't really sound as fleshed out as it could be (hint hint), and it's kind of a chore to get through because of that. the only songs that really stand out to me here are "your disco needs you," "butterfly," and "light years."
impossible princess is an eclectic pop album that just works so well, especially with the huge influences from the trip hop and downtempo scene. there isn't a song on here that wavers in quality, since everything's so consistently good and distinct, and this album is definitely one that i wish was more known for being some of the best pop. "cowboy style," "drunk," "limbo," "dreams,," it's all so good..
whereas let's get to it wasn't really that great with the experimentation, kylie minogue handles it much better and actually results in a decent collection of songs that, although not as danceable as some of her other work, show so much potential in establishing kylie as an artist. "dangerous game," "automatic love," and "falling" are three standouts that are SO GOOD like if these don't show good things for the future i don't know what does..
oh my.. let's get to it is certainly a new direction in kylie's sound, but apart from "too much of a good thing" and "right here, right now," i did not like it. i don't really think that there's much on this album, like, at all, and it falters because there isn't anything holding it together.
although rhythm of love is a whole lot more danceable than kylie's previous two albums, i don't really think it's a huge step up from enjoy yourself.
i prefer enjoy yourself's slower and more dreamy? maybe? sound over kylie's debut, and i think that most of the songs on here are pretty solid, even if a little derivative of stuff at the time.
kylie minogue's debut is relatively forgettable, but it still has a few songs that i vibe with hard, like "i should be so lucky" and "it's no secret." the rest of it is just a little boring.
