Peak year for generic pop and ava continues to be the best at it. Praying wherever her label situation goes leads her to bigger things she deserves better
Best songs: Don't Click Play, Sucks To Be My Ex, Lost Your Faith, Take My Call, Catch My Breath, Fight For Me, Skin in the Game
Worst song: Lovin Myself
Not my thing but did provide me and my shotgun companionship on call of duty
Best songs: Disasterology, Million Dollar Houses (The Painter), I Don't Care If You're Contagious, Stay Away From My Friends
Worst song: The Boy Who Could Fly
The tracklisting both thematically and sonically are so inconsistent but performance wise, this is a big step up from her debut. The rock angsty sound fits Lauren far more than the ballads and while this feels less complete of a project as "Mirror", artistically i do think it's better. This works as a explorative album that Lauren will hopefully lean into more and use for future releases. Still a long way to go, but if she builds on this sound, she could release something truly ... read more
This just feels like a desaturated version of her signature sound with nothing really hitting hard. There's plenty of good songs on here but there's nothing above that and a few below it.
Best songs: The Lights of Seoul, Atlantic Princess, Milky Way
Worst song: Gift
Sonically it is a standard BoA album (so fantastic) but with the passable filler tracks removed. I wouldn't say this album has any of her absolute Best songs on it except "Valenti" and "BESIDE YOU-僕を呼ぶ声-" but it's her most consistently great project yet.
Best songs: BESIDE YOU-僕を呼ぶ声-, VALENTI, JEWEL SONG, Searching for truth
Worst song: Kiseki (track 5)
Pretty bland with every song sounding interchangeable but definitely a necessary step in crafting her sad girl alt pop sound which she has improved greatly since.
Best songs: ...What Are We?, Angelina
Worst song: In Agreement
The soundscape is pleasant and the songs do sound nice but Conan's singing irritates me at points and the songwriting feels very basic. Decent enough, but is not something I'd ever really revisit outside of a couple songs.
Best songs: Actor, Eleven Eleven, Caramel
Worst songs: My World, Class Clown
I appreciate how experimental this mini is. "Kidz Zone" felt messy with a lot of big sounds but it never clicked in place to me? It was trying for bombastic flare but didn't reach that level. Outside of that, the first 2 songs ("MELTING POINT" and "Take My Hand") were decent. "CRUSH" is a weird fit, opting for a much darker sound than every other song here and yelling CRUUUUSH on the chorus came out of nowhere but I found it quite enjoyable 😭 and ... read more
Every song was good but the last few with more guitar influence and a big disco beat definitely drew me in the most. Banger mini overall and was consistently enjoyable!
Best songs: GOOD SO BAD - Japanese Version, HANA, Firework
Worst song: feel the POP - Japanese Version
This type of Japanese Shoegaze (i think?) music isn't really my thing: the instrumentals are pretty but I generally prefer vocals to be at the front of the mix when listening to music. With that being said, this was still a pleasant enough listen. The strings and guitars sounded beautiful and the vocals were enchantingly calming yet eerie simultaneously? Pulled off very well but isn't something I'd generally gravitate towards.
Best songs: AO., night is young, soon
Worst song: ... read more
Her best vocals so far and the way the songs progress with the instruments taking you on a journey...beautiful stuff indeed
Best songs: nothing's gonna change, Amazing Kiss, the meaning of peace, Share your heart (with me), Nobody But You
Worst song: LISTEN TO MY HEART
My first Tyler The Creator album and it did not disappoint! Nothing mind blowing is happening here but there's many fun bangers here. Very enjoyable listen
Best songs: Sugar On My Tongue, Stop Playing With Me, Sucka Free, Big Poe (with Sk8brd)
Worst song: I'll Take Care of You (with Yebba)
It's a very pleasant listen but not particularly engaging. Something feels missing throughout and BoA's vocals are left carrying it. It's still good but could be great if the beats and compositions had more going on.
Best songs: Love Hurts, Love Letter, Don't Start Now
Worst song: Again
The beats bang but their rapping was significantly less enjoyable than on "No Hands". The only verbal performance i liked on this was from Rebecca Black.
Best songs: GO HARD, SEE U DANCE (with Rebecca Black), IS THIS LOVE
Worst songs: LIVE RIGHT, HAVE TO CRY
No one can sink your soul into a body of work the way Ethel Cain can. These songs were pretty much all hard hitting, immersive and beautifully crafted, with very little overstaying their welcome ("Tempest" was the only song that did for me). I typically do not enjoy ambient music, but it is well used here to deepen the feelings and journey of the album. Lovely stuff innit
Best songs: Nettles, Janie, Fuck Me Eyes, Waco Texas, Willoughby's Theme, A Knock At The Door, Dust ... read more
Only 13 years old and already has this level of talent wtf
Best songs: Someday Somewhere, ID;Peace B, Letting You Go, Whatever, I'm Your Lady Tonight, Every Breath You Take, COME TO ME
Worst song: No Way
Some songs definitely hit harder than others (the title track is the best song in k-pop history), but the sound palette is so refreshing and leads to an immersive experience only BoA could pull off.
Best songs: Girls On Top, Addiction, Heroine, If You Were Mine, Do You Love Me?, Garden In The Air, Breathe Again
Worst song: Love Can Make A Miracle
I have never been a lorde fan and while this album didn't change that, I do think some of the criticisms thrown her way are unfair and unfounded. Virgin is already being branded as "Melodrama rejects" by a lot of people, which I can understand that criticism being thrown towards "What Was That", but the rest of this???? "Virgin" definitely fits with Lorde's usual sound pallete, but it is not a direct copy by any means; it feels like a slight evolution. ... read more
