This wasn't bad, but other than a few of the hits, this album didn't really do much for me. I also don't have a whole lot to say about it. I probably wouldn't listen to it again, but I don't feel like I wasted my time.
I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I heard this album was "gothic punk." It was really good though. It starts off kind of weak, but quickly picks up toward the middle and doesn't let go until the album's over. I read somewhere that this was a concept album based around a private detective who was really Captain Hook from Peter Pan? I didn't get that at ALL from this album honestly. Like, not even hints of that concept. So as a concept album this sucks. But as an album about ... read more
This was nice to listen to. It was always calming, even as the tracks reached their peak. I can't think of a single one that didn't build perfectly, and the resolutions for each one were also super good. I think this was probably my best place to start with God Is An Astronaut, mostly because it's super short so I'm able to get a taste of what their records are all about. Can't wait to delve into them more.
I was pretty disappointed with this one. It fell quite short of Curse of the Crystal Coconut. If this had been my first experience with Alestorm, I might not have come back. It feels more serious than Curse, so maybe that's why. When I listen to Alestorm, I was to have a laugh and sing along and be silly. This just didn't do that for me.
Not gonna really drag this on too much. I went into it with super high expectations, expecting it to be a serious contender for one of my all-time favorite albums. It feel slightly short of that. The concept behind The Black Parade is a great one, and the band did a better job executing it than most bands could do. That being said, I feel like the story becomes disconnected during the later half of the album. Like they maybe didn't commit to the concept as much as they should have. It wasn't a ... read more
When an album is sung in a language I don't understand, the rest of the music has to be pretty damn good for me to enjoy it. Jazz ist anders was one of those cases. I had a very fun time listening to this one. Not understanding the words definitely hurt my enjoyment, but I had a good time regardless.
Okay I'm going to try to keep this a little brief. I first heard this album last year, while I was discovering Starset's discography one night, and it didn't leave an impression on me as much as Transmissions and DIVISIONS. I probably listened to it one or 2 more times last year, but not nearly as often as I listened to other Starset albums. It just didn't really work for me. That couldn't be more different now. I've since delved more into the lore behind Starset, and I think this album is the ... read more
Ronnie Radke is a talented musician. His clean vocals are super powerful, and he knows how to put together a melody and is a pretty good rapper. And his unclean vocals aren't bad either. However is a huge piece of shit and has got to be one of the worst people in the industry right now. If his songs weren't so cruel, egotistical, and misogynistic, I might be able to enjoy them a whole lot more. Instead, I find myself mostly tuning out the lyrics and appreciating the rest. The breakdowns are my ... read more
This is a really impressive album given that most of it was written while the band members were teenagers. I mean, Kryptonite (one of the biggest songs to come out of post-grunge) was written by a 15 year old kid while he sat in class. While I don't think the album ever really lives up to that song, that doesn't mean the rest is bad by any means. There isn't a single song I don't like, and none of it feels like filler. The melodies are probably the highlight. I won't say it's all catchy, but ... read more
First things first, this is an improvement upon their self-titled track, which I enjoyed but acknowledged there were a lot of problems. They were still experimenting with the direction they wanted to take. With Like A House On Fire, I think they have found and settled on a sound. And while I understand it's probably not for everyone, especially long-time fans of the band, it happens to be one of my favorite types of music: pop-metal. I really couldn't be more happy with this one. Every single ... read more
I went into this one with very high expectations. I had heard all three of the singles from this album in the past, and really enjoyed them. However upon listening to Polyester Zeal, those expectations were not met. I found myself mildly enjoying myself through the first half of the album, and at times thinking this band was doing something fantastic. The ending really dragged on though, and Imitation didn't do them any favors. One of my biggest critiques of most of the songs, even the ones I ... read more
Very good modern rap rock / nu-metal. It's got some political messages, but done in moderation and good taste. It doesn't feel like they are drowning you in their beliefs, but they aren't afraid to share what they are thinking with their music either. The singer has a lot of variety in his voice. Rap isn't a type of music I find myself gravitating toward, but he's good at it and the metal undertones sell me on it.
This is really good, raw Christian rock. It feels super honest and open, and doesn't really hold your hand. It's about struggling with mental illness through the point of view of a Christian, and all of the issues that brings when staying faithful to your beliefs. It's not something I can particularly relate to, so I'm not giving it as high of a rating as it might otherwise get, but it's still powerful and the last couple tracks hit especially hard.
I've been meaning to listen to this one for a while, and it did not disappoint. The first song gave it a bit of a weak start, but that changes immediately once the second began and lasted all of the way until a great ending. I love the electronic feel this album has, and I think they use the effects in a fun and creative way.
I'll start by saying that my biggest issue with this album, and the only thing stopping me from giving it a 70+, is the singer's screams. I really do not like it. It kind of sounds like he's trying to use the same method he does with his clean vocals while also screaming, which doesn't sound right to me. Everything else about this album was pretty good though. The choruses (where he usually used clean vocals) were powerful, and the breakdowns were fun. I think in order for me to fully enjoy a ... read more
If anyone were to ever ask me, for whatever reason, what Starset and early Three Days Grace would sound like if they were mixed together, I would point them to this band/album. And let them know to expect just a pinch of lighter metalcore influence as well. This is exactly the kind of sound I want from my rock music, and Wake Up Hate delivered it incredibly well for a debut album. It can get a little repetitive at times (only a little), but the short length of the album makes up for that. It ... read more
Here's where my bias against languages I don't understand really shines clearly. I know this because I didn't care for this album at all, EXCEPT for the three tracks that were in english, all of which I really enjoyed and thought were quite fun. It's definitely possible the other songs just weren't as good as the ones in english, but I don't think that's the case. I think what's happening here is that the vocals and lyrics are the strongsuit of this album, so not understanding most of the ... read more
When this album first started off, I immediately got the impression that this was going to be one of those ones where I listen to the full thing just so I can give it a rating. I thought it would be an unpleasant experience, similar to Define The Great Line. I could not have been more wrong. A few tracks in I started realizing this wasn't that bad after all. By the halfway point, I was fully into it and really appreciating everything about it. I don't have a lot of experience with metalcore, ... read more
I enjoyed listening to this album. I don't speak Japanese, and lyrics are super important to me, so that dropped the rating a little bit. But that's just me being picky and ignorant. The vibe this album was giving off is one I really liked. The songs had the tendency to blend together, but that's not really a downside for me. Just an observation. I think this was the perfect length. I didn't find myself waiting for it to be over, or thinking it ended a little too soon. I'll probably come back ... read more
This is a FANTASTIC debut album. This band new exactly what they wanted to do, and they wasted no breath in doing it. The ending kind of lags a little bit, especially compared to how kickass the beginning is, but it's really not that bad and fits the album theme. Speaking of theme, Starset certainly has one. This is a pretty unique concept album. Where most use the song lyrics themselves to tell a story, the story of Transmissions is told with interludes and vague references in the songs. But ... read more
