I have literally never heard an album like this in my life. This is Oliver at his absolute best with writing, production, singing, and tone. Made close with people important to him, it’s also a very personal album. The words aren’t really that layered in meaning or anything but do they have to? In all honesty, this took getting used to, but just the overall mood of the album, the lyricism about grief, loneliness, and change speaks to me now way more than ever, and I’ve gotten accustomed to the folk genre a bit more. It’s definitely not for everyone, but this project really grew on me over time.
If Databend wasn’t an average song at best, this would be a perfect album. John and Nancy is still one of the best songs of all time.
