It feels perverse to even listen to this album, given the subject matter and the context, but David Balfe has made something spectacular. There's no avoiding the death of Paul Curran, and the album serves as an incredible memorial to a talented poet, but beyond that it manages to be a singularly affecting portrayal of grief.

I think what turns me off of a lot of modern Punk music is it’s belittlement of a perceived opposition (See: Slaves ‘Take Control’), rather than a celebration of identity that the movement was founded on.

Unrelenting and, as the title suggests, brutal, this debut solidified the group as one of the best bands in Britain. This is for good reason: Joe Talbot as a frontman is legitimately terrifying on record, occupying a punk posturing akin to a snarling wolf. His voice breaks constantly, and stays in this guttural register, that seems like it’s about to fall apart at any moment. Phil is an unhappy man, and understandably so. After losing his wife a couple years back now he released one of the most emotionally devastating albums of 2017: A Crow Looked At Me was and still is an emotional resonant album, and it is noteworthy in its absence of music. As Phil says himself,‘ death is real, and it’s not for singing about.‘ This album then is less about the death of his wife, and more about what happens afterwards.

Sexual assault allegations aside. Relative success aside. The major disappointment they put me through aside. Summer Salt were a Texas-based trio. While their career may continue after this point, I doubt it will ever be the same. I wouldn’t say that because of what happened to them, I’d argue more that that has to do with the fact that their major-label debut is entirely based on their singularly monotonous appeal.
