What a delight this record is. Even when certain moments threaten to get away from DeMarco, he reigns it in and moves on. Nothing overstays its welcome. There's not a lot of meat on the bones, but who needs that when it feels this good to hit play?
It's a beautiful thing the way this record manages to feel borne out of the mid-2010s and still sounds as eternal as it did back in 2016. It primarily evokes a variety of influences from the 80s and 90s in the ways its melodies (and samples) unfold, but Blood Orange manages to make old new again.
It's bloated, sure. But it still manages to be engaging from start to finish which feels like a feat itself.
Really picks up on the back half of the record. It just feels like an of-the-time Pusha record as opposed to some of his best solo work like Daytona - and My Name is My Name to a lesser extent - that feels timeless.
Don't think this is nearly as kinetic as Remain in Light, its highs don't hit nearly as high, and yet...by the end of most every song, the melodies had burrowed their way into my brain.
