The album recalls the more abstract moments of Global Communication's ambient works, as well as the glacial expanses of Jenssen's 1996 collaboration with Higher Intelligence Agency, Polar Sequences, and is quite easily among his most accomplished, satisfying works to date.

Nothing about it grabs your attention violently but rather seeps into your mind over time, slowly growing and growing until you can no longer ignore it.

Its sound is the aural equivalent of blinding light in a desolate darkness, like being wrapped in an electric blanket in the dead of winter. It brings to mind imagery of glowing nebulae, moonlight shadows on frozen lakes, and the time-lapse photography of Arctic northern lights.

Now it seems that rhythm is out of the question and, accordingly, the first time you listen to 'Substrata' you will be believe it consists of a series of humming noises that go on for a very long time.

Listening to this ambient work feels like diving into the coldest waters of Antarctica; swimming through an endless cold sea, chills running down your spine. Yet you can feel a sense of warmth. It is a nice, pretty minimal ambient album, the atmosphere it builds is really nice, I didn't have much thoughts besides that, there are some really beautiful moments and it does come from a really underrated country (Norway).

It is just too minimal or too boring at times for me, the voice clips sampling is cool sometimes but can be distracting at others. Not all too bad, did wish for something ... read more

Liked this, but considering I expected an ambient masterclass I found myself left a little cold to Substrata. There is one genuinely unbelievable moment where the hypnosis of the album intersects beautifully with the minimal, gentle sound, namely the remarkable third track Chukhung, but the rest is mostly very good, if a little standard, ambient stuff.

Night is freezing, and a fair bit scarier. Night is falling, and the wind grows heavier.

From the first track impressions I expected this to be better unfortunately, the rest did not live up to the same quality for me
