With his debut LP, Gesaffelstein is not only taking aim at ending the loudness wars, he is fortifying the roots of a very successful career. With production credits on Yeezus already on his resume, Gesaffelstein possesses the talent to produce hits across a wide range of genres and still find the time to destroy the most pretentious of techno clubs.
It’s a testament to Levy’s talent, and to the strength of his sonic identity, that Aleph merits comparison to Yeezus in terms of its thematic consistency and coherence.
Aleph has some pretty hard-hitting tech house highlights, but most of the subdued tracks just simply aren't as engaging, and only seem like they exist to balance out the aggressive moments here--a lot of which sound very similar.
The bangers are BANGERS but everything surrounding them tends to linger and only be on here so Aleph isn’t just an hour on non stop aggression. But in all honestly, gimme an hour of aggression if it’s gonna sound like those tracks.
Man this was the same guy that released GAMMA!? Gesaffelstein is a big pioneer in the genre of Midtempo Bass, and its present in his first album for sure. But man this album was good, however it does suffer from an inconsistent first half. Like the first half would have one banger of a track and then it’ll just be a really boring track the next.
