As a stopgap between LP releases, The Missing Man is a step forward in AFI's adult evolution and another catalog highlight.
As perfunctory as most of the decisions are across these five tracks, a sense of enforced edginess makes this EP a cute and endearing experience. The '90s hardcore punks turned mid-2000s emo icons seem to have created a new genre: Hot Topic dad rock.

I remember when this EP first came out; people were super excited for it and held it on a huge pedestal as a return to the glory days for AFI. Being more of a fan at the time of their later hardcore punk era than their pop punk era to follow, I was disappointed by this release at first. As time had passed, I had somewhat forgotten about it, though, to the point where I haven’t really gotten around to rating it until now, a little over 4 years later.

Trash Bat is the star of this album, an incredibly fun 2 minute burst of energy. "What's a Trash Bat? Who cares!"
I LOVE some of the new sounds they got on the title track. The violins, the bongos, the trip-hop inspired beat, it just all came together on this track to be fresh and interesting. I love when AFI experiment and it goes well for them.
