The debut by Sweden’s Ghost ... is a goldmine of expertly written and played mega-retro 70’s style satanic heavy metal.

Opus Eponymous is an extraordinary debut that slowly peels back surprise after surprise as you delve into its 35 minutes of music. Sure, the style is old-school, but it's musically very rich, often more subtle than riff-oriented, and as closing instrumental "Genesis" proves, capable of moments of disarming beauty.

Although its songs are rife with heavy metal's favorite subject matter and unmistakably menacing brand of staccato guitar riffing, the restraint of their attack, not to mention their production (no overdriven amplifiers are to be found here), hark back to what passed for a metallic aesthetic during the very early '80s, or even before.

The lyrics are very cultist and satanic, but still catchy. The slightly deadpan vocals only make the sound eerier--along with the sinister organ, of course.

Not a bad debut by any means, but Ghost really got so much better after Meliora, I like the new era of Ghost the most.

I remember downloading this when it dropped and their popularity was brimming but they ended up exploding. This is still my favorite record by them though.
The intro is pleasant as it moves into "Con Clavi Con Dio". Nice energy and groove, great doomy bass riff. The organ does a wonderful job too. The vocals are fun, I especially enjoy the inflections on the title itself. "Ritual" has a nice melody to it, nice power to the riffing. Really good classic ... read more

i was searching through albums cuz I was bored and didn't knew what to listen to so I made that choice with album covers and Ghost instantly clicked on me... especially this cover and the mary on a cross one
