As complex, compelling, and at times unsettling a record as Cale has unleashed since 1982's Music For A New Society.
Deep voiced, disquieting and bristling with intelligence, Hobo Sapiens is a reminder of how intoxicating an artist Cale can be.
About half of it works reasonably well, though the end result is somehow closer to Low-era Bowie or Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain than anything truly contemporary or avant-garde.
To lean on lazy Bowie career comparisons this would probably be Cale's 'Heathen' with a mix of artful meandering experimental tunes and some more peppy upbeat numbers, with a backdrop of subtle electronic touches colouring around the edges.
It was never going to sell millions of copies but I'm certain that wasn't the intention here; judged on artistic measures this is a successful latter career comeback that gives the long standing fan plenty to chew on.
Does it go on a bit? Maybe a little.
