A wondrous listen, Pond are a charming and talented band: both attributes that come in spades on 9.
The band that keeps on giving, having pushed their self-proclaimed "polished psych-pop" to its outer reaches, reinvent themselves yet again.
Among its mix of roistering anthems and melodramatic balladry, ‘9’ exudes a supple confidence throughout, engaging in some of the most enthralling Australian psychedelia to emerge from 2021 (of which there is plenty).
Pond wanted to create an album that’s less tidy and more all-over-the-place. Compositions born out of improvised jamming sessions, less polished finishes with lots of creatively-used feedback and tape delays, as well as featuring some lyrics cut and paste from various sources.
If their ninth album is the sound of something “completely f---ed”, then keep it coming.
A bracing set of giddy jams and vibrant melodies, 9 equips Pond's spliffed-out mutant-psych formative urges with the controlled urgency of their evolved latter work.
It’s not all perfect - “Czech Locomotive” and “Toast” drag - but this is a refreshing and genuinely engaging album.
Following a series of increasingly refined albums, Pond have radically changed things up.
Too many of the songs fail to deliver the mind blowing moments that the band have been capable of in the past.
'9' by Pond is a very specific album. To an extent on psychedelic music, these tracks are borderline sounding like electropop/pop rock to me. The artwork is one the best parts of this musical delight of a record, not only the tracklist is filled with a dynamic group of songs but they also work very well by themselves. Perhaps this isn't the best piece of music they ever did as a band but it works very well in the current universe, the production is somehow based in classical rock manuevers but ... read more
Portada 9/9 ... read more

Trance-electro pop with some rock popping up here and there. I like how 9 as the most energetic and jumpy album doesn't abandon the sense of dreaminess from their ealier work. There's a really solid run of engaging songs. It was also the album that made me come back around to Pond, finding out they have clicked with me quite well. So for a moment my favourite of their.
Only issue I've got here? Its unfortubately not a 9/10 like the name suggests.
