NULL might be remembered as the greatest album in KEN mode's already formidable discography, expressing the desperation and anxiety — bolstered by a newfound sense of dimension — that the band has always been so adept at translating.

The Winnipeg-based band returns with "Null", their eighth album, a release that showcases KEN MODE maintaining its foundational quirky ferocity whilst also transposing it toward a much drearier and depressive landscape.

Distorted Sound

Perhaps most remarkable of all is that even though a 35-minute runtime is hardly a huge ask, Null never gets caught plodding in its own misery and mire.

Angry Metal Guy

NULL, while recognizably the same band, leads head first with a floor stabbed by thick bass rumbles, hypnotic, brutish chugs, throbbing synth simmers, and a ceiling shattered by Kerr’s woodwind wail.

NULL ... is more ambitious, seeking to tear down the walls of the band’s home and open up bigger, badder soundscapes to claim as their own. In this endeavor, regrettably, KEN mode may have gnawed off just a sliver more than they can chew.

One of the most underrated bands that I listen to is KEN mode, a group that effortlessly blends elements from noise rock, post-hardcore, sludge metal and no wave to make what could be categorized as "noise hardcore", and on their eighth album, their most terrifying side takes over, creating their most dissonant and opressive record to date.

If Loved focused more on dark and terrific atmospheres than most of their discography, NULL explores that sound even more, with more emphasis on ... read more

Some pretty angry shit right here. Can't believe I missed this release during 2022, but, I'm not sure I would've been ready for something THIS maniacal before I had really dived deep into other music similar to this. That was before I had even dipped my toes into the Post-Hardcore / No Wave genre. Now though, that I've heard a few different projects under this umbrella, I can say that nothing here is too revolutionary, however, it's still got some really cool and interesting ideas that are ... read more

The saxophone is the devil's instrument, listen to A Love Letter and tell me otherwise.

This is one of the most blatantly evil sounding things I've ever listened to. 𝒩𝒰ℒℒ is horrifying in every way, the atmosphere of the entire project is oppressive and dark, it's disgustingly heavy, dissonant and noisy and the lyrics are nihilistic and hopeless. And that is precisely why I think 𝒩𝒰ℒℒ is great. Despite it's radical heavieness, 𝒩𝒰ℒℒ offers a ... read more

Very solid album, I was listening to this at the gym which isn't really the best time for an album like this. It's more of a can't go to sleep and its 3am typa album πŸ™‚
