PopMatters

With Outrun on the books, Kavinksy has firmly defined himself as a musician capable of forming, and then effectively nailing, an overarching concept of artistic vision.

80
NME

Years touring with Daft Punk have made a deep impression, and Kavinsky has created a glossy synth sound that’s undercut with a sinister edge.

80
SPIN

For Kavinsky, B-grade electronic '80s gunk is rocket fuel, and it makes Outrun soar.

80
The Skinny

A long-incubating debut, but Outrun proves to have been well worth the wait.

80
Mixmag
It’s not perfect – a couple of tracks slightly overdo the asthmatic-sounding compression – but mainly it’s a really impressively consistent and well-structured listen, and definitely worth the wait.

Beats Per Minute

Outrun is exactly what it aspires to be: a fun retro-pop-dance album for those who like to drive fast through cities at night, perhaps behind a pair of sunglasses.

70
AllMusic

Kavinsky's 2013 album Outrun is a limited listen with a handful of highlights that were made available previously, but such is life for the fast and futuristic.

70
No Ripcord

The most rousingly, entertainingly, ridiculously dumb record that 2013 will have to offer.

70
Consequence of Sound

Once you’ve finished Kavinsky’s OutRun, you’ll want to buckle up and ride again.

63
Pitchfork

Because most of Outrun's musical references are to non-musical media, it's kind of unclear what its purpose is.

Drowned in Sound

For all this consistency of sound and vision, and this perfectly defined sense of self, something about Outrun seems a little self-indulged.

Under the Radar
Too much of Kavinsky's debut LP is overly repetitive, and little of it leaves any lasting impact.

Nightcall is a synthwave classic but unfortunately I found most of this album pretty unimpressive. I appreciate Kavinsky's influence of one of my favorite genres, but I mostly didn't care for the music he put out at least for this album.

If you haven't watched the movie "Drive", with Ryan Gosling, you really missing out.
The movie is good but the soundtrack is phenomenal.
That's what brought me to this album.
Just listen to Nightcall and tell me it sucks.

Best: Nightcall (hm: ProtoVision)
Worst: Deadcruiser (honestly idk what to choose as the worst)

57/100 it’s a good album nothing better. It creates great atmosphere for a movie (which i watched, i recommend “Drive” to everyone actually). Soooo idk at all what to say, good late night listen, i guess, i feel like i don’t understand something about modern synthwave and shit but this isn’t making my rotation at all besides Nightcall which is a banger, ... read more

i like it but i wonder how much of this Kavinsky really produced because it sounds more like a SebastiAn synthwave album
