CRITIC REVIEWS

80
NME

Years touring with Daft Punk have made a deep impression, and Kavinsky has created a glossy synth sound that’s undercut with a sinister edge.

80
Spin

For Kavinsky, B-grade electronic '80s gunk is rocket fuel, and it makes Outrun soar.

80
PopMatters

With Outrun on the books, Kavinksy has firmly defined himself as a musician capable of forming, and then effectively nailing, an overarching concept of artistic vision.

79
Beats Per Minute

Outrun is exactly what it aspires to be: a fun retro-pop-dance album for those who like to drive fast through cities at night, perhaps behind a pair of sunglasses.

70
No Ripcord

The most rousingly, entertainingly, ridiculously dumb record that 2013 will have to offer.

70
AllMusic

Kavinsky's 2013 album Outrun is a limited listen with a handful of highlights that were made available previously, but such is life for the fast and futuristic.

70
Consequence of Sound

Once you’ve finished Kavinsky’s OutRun, you’ll want to buckle up and ride again.

63
Pitchfork

Because most of Outrun's musical references are to non-musical media, it's kind of unclear what its purpose is.

60
Drowned in Sound

For all this consistency of sound and vision, and this perfectly defined sense of self, something about Outrun seems a little self-indulged.

Kavinsky’s thriller debut album of futuristic synthwave cinematic pieces fused together to be named OutRun makes you feel like you’re living in either Tron or The Matrix. It’s out of this world with the production and sounds. It feels very basic at points though, especially in areas like the drums. It doesn’t feel too new which partially ruins the futuristic aspect of it, but it still has this fantastic narrative and theme behind it that is wildly original and innovative.

A fusion of synthwave, electro house, disco and Daft Punk never sounded this good.
