Personal and grand at the same time, Again's mixtape of memories continues Lopatin's enduring brilliance at moving forward by looking back.
No longer an underground quantity thanks to his work with The Weeknd and the all-consuming score to the Safdie Brothers’ film Uncut Gems (2019), his chaotic, emotive electronic style is perfectly suited to the AI tools used here.
With Again, Lopatin captures the numbing clutter and volatile emptiness of post-digital, post-humanistic life: the silence that chokes, the clamor that drowns. And while these aren’t original themes (numerous artists have explored these polarities), Lopatin’s response seems notably relevant and largely his own.
You could criticise Again for the way it presents an excess of ideas that challenge its coherence as a seamless listening experience; its shifts in tone render it slightly more challenging to digest than Oneohtrix’s more classic albums. Nevertheless, it stands as an admirably robust addition to a back catalogue with few equals.
Frequently unclassifiable, and never dull, ‘Again’ is a stop-sign on his perpetual onward journey.
0PN enhances some of the past sounds of his career on Again.
The absolute legend OREOhtrix Point never is back!!
I wasn't aware that he was dropping by today, such a pleasant surprise. I've listened to a few more of his works that I really liked as well. If there's any electronic artist whose abilities come even decently close to that of Aphex Twin, it would be ... read more
Wow. This is really cool, honestly.
Oneohtrix Points Never is an artist who I have heard some stuff from at this point, including his Replica album, which is just amazing, and “Good Time”, which is great, “The Pure and the Damned”, which features Iggy Pop on vocals and is amazing, and Nobody Here, which is amazing. I learned about this one through @UltimateLifeFrm since he told me about it. And I am so glad he did cause this is amazing!
The production is great, as it ... read more
Brief Review: Not my favorite thing OPN has done, but it’s def quite the experience. Some really nice soundscapes and vocals from various people on this, one of his more out there releases. Nice time!
Still basic, yet still way better than whatever the hell magic oneohtrix point never was.
Also i don't really understand the hype around a barely lit path... It's just a regular prog electronic track just like every single song in this album
