Trace EXCELS in its heavier tracks- Drown for instance feels like it could be the anthem to define all of Jay Farrar’s body of work, which is no small statement. The softer tracks are certainly serviceable as well, but more often than not feel like Uncle Tupelo leftovers without Tweedy
Son Volt is an odd beast. Jay, unfairly, is overlooked and I often wonder if that's contributed to such an uneven discography. Still, though, I think Trace is brilliant. An excellent showing across the board that will not likely sway those who aren't into alt country, but should have a high place in the hearts of those who do.
