The Lion And The Cobra is an intense experience, an album that’s almost impossible to listen to casually- if it doesn’t draw the listener in, it’s likely to lose their interest completely ... Emotionally honest; perfect by merely being imperfect.

Pitchfork
An uncompromising debut, pop music that ventures to the extremes of sound and emotion.

AllMusic

An eerie, expansive sound heavy on atmosphere and tortured passion.

With The Lion and the Cobra, Sinéad O’Connor joins the ranks of Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson and Jane Siberry — all women who are shattering the boundaries of pop music.

The Lion and the Cobra is regal, majestic, and allegorical, an album rife with images of war, slain dragons, and ghosts.

Sinead O'Connor debut album is one fot the history books, on here the talented irish singer shows all ger potential, bringing a dozen of different genres to the table and mixing them in an artsy calderon full of psychedelic elements.

Incredible debut album, one of the best I've heard in recent memory. I expected it to be good but this really blew me away. The rawness of Sinéad's voice is amazing and her vocal performance is what I love the most about this record. Don't get me wrong, everything on this album works but her voice is obviously the most important aspect here and she nailed it. I still can't believe that she was 21 years old when she released "The Lion and the Cobra". The sheer power in her voice ... read more

I'm actually in shock that this album came out in 1987, it sounds WAY ahead of its time. The instrumentals are pristine, Sinéad's vocals are powerful and emotional, and the concise nature of this album all leave few overall flaws. I'm disappointed in the fact that this has barely over a thousand ratings; it deserves much more recognition on this site.

Big time fan of Sinead and yet somehow I'd never listened to one of her album so I started with her debut. This album is sooo good and already had some of my sinead favs such as drink before the war and mandinka. I will never forgive them for what they did to her
