Geese - Projector

"I dance, I pray the rain away"

Really great foundation for Geese. While I do think their future work contains more creative spurs, I have a huge soft spot for this album, it just sounds so good. Winters lyricism isn't as potent here either, but again its made up for with how fun this album is.

Favourites: Rain Dance, Low Era, Projector

Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal

"Love will make you fit it all in the car"

It takes a while of sitting with, but this is an incredible display of writing that drives deep into whatever makes us. So many lines here seem so mundane upon first instance, until they suddenly click. Because, yeah, love WILL make you fit it all in the car, and that is that. Love will never be so succinctly described again. What Winter did here is so essential to music, the act of creation without boundary.

"Are you with me, Jasmine? Can you let me in?"

A time capsule that takes you straight into the mid 2010s, so much potential lies in these unfinished demos, but it almost adds to the enigmatic intrigue this album possesses. A great collection of tracks and ideas, despite the circumstances.

Favourites: Str8 Outta Mumbai, Genevieve, Jasmine
Least favourites: raw beat, baby beat

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS - MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS

Really, really loved this. I enjoyed their EP from 2009, and was just as pleased with this (if not more so). "エンドロール" is an incredible, sprawling standout. Every element here works perfectly together, very enjoyable listen.

Favourites: delusionalism, skabetty, エンドロール

We Lost The Sea - Departure Songs

----------- REVIEW #100 -----------

"slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."

Thought I'd save something important for my 100th review in my effort to archive all I've listened to, and this felt more than right. This is by no means the most technically impressive post-rock album I've heard, but it is by the far the most devastating. The concept of a band becoming instrumental after the death of their vocalist is so beautifully tender, ... read more

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS - ワールドイズユアーズ [World Is Yours]

Incredible EP recommended by a friend, these guys are great. The vocalist is incredible, the guitar work effective, an all round strong project, will have to listen to their other stuff.

Favourites: 青い、濃い、橙色の日, かくいうもの, ワールドイズユアーズ
Least favourites: N/A

Whitearmor - In the Abyss: Music for Weddings
69

A very well produced ambient album that is what it says on the tin, really. Feels like an extra something is missing from some of these tracks (particularly ones in the middle) that would make them stand out more, but it starts and ends well, even if it lacks in memorability.

Favourites: Cold Nights Pt 2, Gåvor, Outro
Least favourites: Kisses and Hugs, Smile, Slow Dance

Mitski - Nothing's About to Happen to Me

Some great lines and ideas here, but the sound palette itself lacks anything to hold onto, everything sounds a little lackluster and a little uninteresting :( Wanted to like this one, it just didn't click with me.

Favourites: If I Leave
Least favourites: Where's My Phone

Oneohtrix Point Never - The Fall Into Time

6 relatively simple yet dynamic ambient cuts, "Sand Partina" is especially compelling. Very relaxing with a subtle sense of melancholy and anxiety, makes for a very interesting experience.

Favourites: Sand Partina, Memory Vague, Kgb Nights

Mandy, Indiana - URGH
49

A few moments I do really like are largely reduced in impact due to very rough surroundings, I admire the experimental nature far more than I enjoy most of the sounds here. When it works, it works, when it doesn't, it really doesn't for me.

Favourites: Dodecahedron, A Brighter Tomorrow
Least favourites: Sevastopol, try saying, Sicko!

Various Artists - HELP(2)

A powerhouse collection of artists make a great compilation for a great cause. While a lot is simply average, a few really strike a chord that make it well worth combing through.

Favourites: The 343 Loop, Black Boys on Mopeds, Warning
Least favourites: Flags, Lilac Wine, Say Yes

Andrew Wasylyk - Irreparable Parables

While the array of features here create a grander feel, I prefer Andrews more instrumental work. This is still soothing for the most part, and makes for a very warm listen.

Favourites: Moonbeams of Adulthood, Soul Enters
Least favourites: The Cold Collar, Hachi No Su

Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.

Harry Styles is an artist with a scattering of good songs, but never a good album. I get the feeling that his access to top of the line musicians is what produces the rare sparks of quality. I can respect a pop star as huge as him taking the risk to release something like this, but it just feels a little empty. Even the slow, supposedly emotive tracks fall extremely flat, as if he himself is bored. There's glimmers here and there of some creative ideas, but they are never followed through ... read more

"It's about time, this is what it looks like"

The intro, "Happiness", "Part of the Band" and "About You" are the only songs here that haven't grown off of me (I do have a soft spot for "When We Are Together" though), the rest lack a driving factor that warrants return, they're serviceable pop songs but with no real depth, even if they nearly convince you they do. Some of the lyrics here are iffy, too. Still, the highs are ... read more

"Do you wanna leave at the same time?"

I spent a long time sporting this as the pinnacle of The 1975, proclaiming that this is an underrated masterpiece. It's not quite. It's rough around the edges and definitely could've used some editing, I think about half of these tracks could be removed and the experience would be better for it. The highlights are high, with "People", "Frail State", "Too Shy", with my personal favourites including ... read more

"And I'd love it if we made it"

As my taste has progressed and I've listened to a broader range of music, I've realised that The 1975 are a borderline cover band, with this album being the issue at its most apparent. What impressed me so much about this album initially had been done better beforehand, I just hadn't been exposed to the influences prior, so I hailed the band as geniuses. Don't get me wrong, I think this album is genuinely good, and of course ... read more

"Cause there's a change in pressure, we're never gonna lie to you"

It's difficult, some of these were seminal in my adolescence, at one point essential to my personality, but as I grew I found myself drifting away from them. "Sex", "Pressure" and "12" are the only tracks here I come back to, the rest are either worn out or just not as much my thing anymore.

The 1975 are a band I owe a lot of self-discovery to, but I also spent the ... read more

The 1975 - IV

"I think I've lost a lot of my friends through belief that I'm an instrument"

"The City", again, does not need to be here. "Haunt" and "Fallingforyou" are nice and "So Far" doesn't really serve much of a purpose. The final and most average EP.

The 1975 - Music for Cars
70

"Don't you mind, don't you mind?"

"Chocolate" brings this down a lot, its just not a good song. "HNSCC" and "Me" are both heart wrenching and save this EP. "Anobrain" and "Bending" are both good.

Favourites: HNSCC, Me
Least favourites: Chocolate

The 1975 - Sex EP

"The skin that you're in is all soft now"

A near perfect display of the bands talents so early on. "Intro" is a beautiful track, "Undo" is great, "Sex" is a staple and "You" and "Milk" are both really good.

Favourites: Intro, Sex, You
Least favourites: N/A
