“It’s hard to grip what’s hard to hold”
Daughter of Dave Grohl makes a better album than Dave Grohl. Very standard grungy indie rock, many influences are extremely audible throughout, but it’s a solid listen. Nothing too special, but has some really killer songs that are just so well made. Most of these just feel quite unoriginal though :( Can’t complain too much, because they do sound great, just gets a little old. Impressive debut.

“Tip-toe as I go from A to B”
A collection of short and sweet bursts of energy, pleasantly surprised by this! Nothing too complex or unexpected, but it sounds great and is a really satisfying listen. Wish this was longer and more developed, really love the noisier sections and how they contrast the otherwise quite serene atmosphere.

I unfortunately don’t get much from this :( It doesn’t really do much that makes it stand out from the crowd, and this specific sound of electropop is approaching “being done to death” territory. Reminds me of Charli and other acts a bit too much. Unlike other releases this year that I’ve enjoyed in the genre, this hasn’t clicked.

by which, as somebelieve,
the world has many times been turned to chaos.
And at that moment this ancient rock,
here and elsewhere, fell broken into pieces.”

"Let's play it back and see what it sounds like"
After a prolonged absence, they return with something deeply foreboding, almost prophetic. This is the precipice of the end of the world. The second track is brimming with dread, setting this new tone perfectly. This album feels more focused, more deeply driven than anything they've done before. It lurches forward and feels frustrated, yet at times completely ambivalent, floating in a brewing apocalypse. I think this is on ... read more
Completing the unofficial trilogy is something that moves away from the unsettling nature of its siblings, instead embracing something more uplifting and grounded. This feels so unusually laidback and relaxing, like more of an epilogue. It's almost hopeful. Very full of life and safe, it sets out to create a more ambient atmosphere and does so extremely well, and the guitar adds a dynamic that ties everything together.
This was the album I was least familiar with, and it may genuinely ... read more
"Just fantasize"
Very warm with an unsettling, haunting backdrop that lingers. Like childhood memories that are disintegrating, now left with an ominous fog surrounding them. This is much more mellowed out than their follow-up, very calming and open with small hints of melancholy. Love the more ambient lean this takes too, the back-half is where this really shines. Feels familiar in such an eerie way. This may even take the edge over "Geogaddi" for me, but they are so very, ... read more
"The past inside the present"
In preparation for their 2026 release tonight, I wanted to give their prior work some proper reviews :) This is one of the most mysterious and fascinating albums I've ever heard. Obscenely alluring, alien, dark, nostalgic and complex. I adore the sequencing of short interludes between long statement tracks, feels like a film reel of fragmented memories experienced in the moments before death.
There are some very weird sections that take a while to ... read more
"The sky lights up once again, like sunrise rode at his fall, you know this"
A selection of B-sides, singles and rarities. They're mostly solid, much of the same sound, but I can see why these are scraps and things that didn't make the cut. The mixing is a little strange in places. I might be doing these a disservice by listening to a few of their projects back-to-back, but a lot of these meld together with no singular identity. They do one trick very, very well, but it can ... read more
"Lover, we can be lovers"
I see what they were trying here, but this is a pretty major misstep :( This is quite long and repetitive, with a lot of tracks that just exist for a while with no direction. "Alarms" is a stand-out by far, great track, "Goatband" too, phenomenal. I appreciate the riskier, more experimental direction, but I don't think it fully pays off in the end, feeling quite tedious to get through (the 22 minute last 3-song run is difficult to ... read more
"Mother, darksome and divine, thine the scourge and thine the kiss"
Amazing follow-up album harnessing similar themes and expanding upon them, maintaining the 70's inspirations. Some of this retreads old ground a little too closely, such as in "The Light Within" having the same riff as "Goatman" from the prior album, but I can also see it as a reference, and the song goes so hard that I hardly mind. Very much feels like a refining of their formula, this band ... read more
“The important thing is this; to be able at any moment, to sacrifice what we are, for what we could become”
They don’t call ‘em Goat for nothing. Incredibly fresh while paying homage to so many sounds before them, this is an insanely good debut album. Adore the vocals, they fit the vibe this curates perfectly, so energetic and fun. Really feels like taking a trip around the globe, taking little bits of inspiration and condensing them into one bursting experience. Such a ... read more
"Tell her she was the only thing that made me stop thinking 'bout the plains of North America"
Genuinely laughed at multiple lines in this, really well executed with a great balance of humour and great instrumentals. Some aspects were a bit overbearing, such as the synthetic voice on "Pyramid" and some pitched vocals and sound effects that were more irritating than funny, but it's an overall really great time that's very catchy and memorable.

"Either restless or reborn, we're going"
I've sat with this a while, since the Social Scene are one of my favourite bands of all time, and I really wanted to give this time to grow on me, but it seems to only be doing the opposite :( I am so grateful to see another album from the collective, but I get the unshakable feeling that there was little drive behind the project. It feels like music for the sake of it, which absolutely isn't always a bad thing, in fact, ... read more
One of the best soundtracks I've heard in a while, been on repeat since I saw the film (which is also incredible!). I adore how serene and lovely it feels at points despite scoring a horror movie, some of these tracks are so uplifting, made heartbreaking when given the context. This sprawling ambience is so perfect for what "Obsession" sets out to do, it's really emotionally affecting. My only gripe is that I wish the tracks flowed into one another more smoothly, but as it ... read more
“Following the street lamps (I need to feel it sometimes)”
Breathtakingly gorgeous. Sleepy and spaced out, this might be the most a cover has ever matched the music. Calming and intensely nostalgic with waves of layered sound and reassuring vocals, like a warm hug in the frigid morning. Makes me think of so many times and places that now exist solely inside of my head.

“We are turning cursive letters into knives”
Very similar in quality to “Pussy Whipped”, which is a positive as I see these as two halves of a whole, and almost always listen to them together. This one feels more toned down, and offers more of breathing space, which works very well as a comedown from its predecessor.

Energetic, noisy and abrasive in the best ways. 25 minutes straight of incredible performances, very addicting and replayable. Some of the best the 90’s scene had to offer.

“Tomorrow, who’s gonna fuss?”
Simply an amazing record. “Androgynous” is so wonderful I teared up a little. What a heartfelt and simple song. He has a fantastic voice, lends itself to the atmosphere so well throughout. Feels warm and familiar, very glad I checked it out. EDIT: It has only grown with every listen, absolutely love this. (88 > 92)

Very ambitious scope of genres, I’m not so sure they end up working for me though. I can tell this is meaningful and authentic, it’s bursting with life and expression, but it’s not often my thing. It also sounds too much like a knock off, Disney version of FKA Twigs at times, which frustrates me, because it simply reminds me I’d rather be listening to Twigs.
