fun little project, Heaven is the best track here by a mile, but thoroughbred and network spirit are very solid as well. this definitely deserves more attention!
I will definitely hand it to this record, the production is quite good. the mixing is done really well to balance all of the different things going on in the songs, but unfortunately this record consistently leaves me wanting so much more from the actual songs themselves. I only found 2, maybe 3 songs on here that I can say that I had any desire to come back to after hearing them, and oddly enough those songs were the more understated and stripped back moments like Ten Dead and Evicted. I ... read more
honestly, there's some really good shit on here. the first 4 songs are seriously fanstastic, and most of the songs that aren't just completely stupid (children of the korn and all in the family) are genuinely decent nu-metal songs, but the record definitely goes on longer than it needs to and the songs that bog it down are truly god-awful.
wow. what a way to follow up their debut, this thing is a REMARKABLY smart approach to indie rock. pinning down the style on this record is a bit tough, there is plenty of PPR early 2000s NYC influence to this record for sure, but that's really all they are on the record is influences. the band approaches them with this remarkably calculated approach to innovating on that old sound in a way that's super modern, super well groomed and well assembled, incredibly interesting and bursting with ... read more
What a wonderful stroke of genius this record is. The concept is interesting, the songs are remarkably tight, the instrumental performances are fantastic across the board (extra credit to Seth Evans for the absolutely masterful piano work on this record). Fantastic sophomore record from HMLTD that I hope people come to appreciate more and more with time.
I don't get it tbh. The highlights on here are fucking stellar ($20, Leonard Cohen, Satanist, We're In Love), but this is way too inconsistent, too straightforward, I feel like the majority of these songs just give me absolutely nothing to grab onto with the lyricism, songwriting, instrumentals, vocal performances, and overall chemistry between these three as a band. I don't hate it, and even the worst songs on here aren't necessarily BAD, but I am far too underwhelmed and uninterested by the ... read more
Really solid record overall, I do wish it was about 25 minutes shorter though, definitely some filler in here but a remarkably strong showing from Lana on the whole
i think this is a really decent record that could have been stellar, even AOTY material, if it wasn't so brutally kneecapped by its passable-at-best production and mixing
this is one of the most painstakingly boring, uninteresting, half-baked albums I have ever heard. What the fuck is this album? The beats and production are fucking weak, there is little to no nuance or interesting detail, just the basics with absolutely no interesting tunes or melodies, and the vocals are just strange and off-putting to listen to. I really am kind of amazed at how much I hated this lol
yea, this thing is perfect tbh. it took forever for me to get there, but as of this week i finally understand how much of an OBSCENE triumph this record is. one of the best debut albums of all time.
