Deftones Binge #8
Y'all got this one so wrong. This is fucking amazing. This album is so gorgeous, I absolutely love this era of the band to bits. The songs on this record are so full of this intense, entrancing hope that is so incredibly beautiful to me. I honestly don't think there is a single track on here that I didn't love, and the fact that this seems to be the popular pick for the worst Deftones album is absolutely mind-boggling to me. I just adore the sound the band went for with this ... read more

Goddamn, Leathers is a great track. This album is a bit of a strange example of Deftones because I feel like this one is stylistically all over the place and doesn't really know exactly what it wants to be, but still somehow ends up being a pretty great record without as much of a laser focus as some of their earlier works. The choruses here are the most anthemic the band has ever made, and throughout the record it really works to its benefit, but I feel like for the most ... read more

Honestly, this is the Deftones album that I have the least amount to say about so far. It's just...pretty good? Nothing super insane, but nothing bad either, there's just a good set of pretty quality songs that I liked, but not really loved. It's just pretty good.

Damn, y'all weren't kidding about Pink Cellphone, were you? That song is really that fuckin uncomfortable and gross, which is incredibly unfortunate considering how without that song on here, this would handily be Deftones' best album. This is just the perfect mix of the shoegazey guitars, great vocal performances, and interesting song structures and experimentation that the band has been so good at on different records across their career. Track for track, this record ... read more

Okay, so the fact that this is the worst Deftones album I've heard in this binge so far definitely says a lot about the sheer quality of their discography, because even though this is handily my least favorite, there is still so much quality in here. The first half of the album is honestly jam-packed with great tracks, with Needles and Pins being one of the best songs the band has ever released imo, but the record definitely falls in quality in the back half. I genuinely ... read more

W H A T . This album feels a lot like their past two albums, but with one key difference: atmosphere. Everything that made their first two records so great is still here in spades, but the woozy atmosphere of Teenager and Digital Bath are perfect examples of how the band took their time to amp up the attention to detail on White Pony, and the result is their most mature record so far. What an absolutely fantastic album, I can't wait to come back to this one and spend more ... read more

Following up the absolute banger of a first album with even more groovy and instantly catchy riffs, manic vocals, and SOME OF THE CRISPIEST DRUMS YOU'VE EVER FUCKING HEARD, Around the Fur is an absolute force to be reckoned with. This album has some songs that reach peak metal territory with My Own Summer, Be Quiet and Drive, and the title track, and even though the last 2 tracks on the record are a little lackluster and the whole obnoxious 37 minute song that doesn't need to ... read more

Holy shit. They started their career with a record this good? My god this thing is a fucking beast of an album, pretty much every single song on here is just an absolute rager, there wasn't a second of this album that I wasn't somewhat enjoying myself. Goddamn, what an impressive debut.
Carly Rae Jepsen Binge #7 (Final)
GOD this album is so fuckin fun. Really wish I had spent a bit more time with this one during 2022 because it definitely would have made my year-end list if I had, because this thing is PACKED with incredibly fun, sometimes goofy and lovable bops and jams that are sticky sweet and really smart and well-written to boot. Definitely one of Carly's better releases to date, I have a feeling that this one will age like fine wine in the greater context of her ... read more

This is a really mixed bag for me, and honestly the first thing in her discog since Kiss that I felt like was anything less than really good. There are some fuckin insane bangers and bops on here, but pretty much the entire back half of this album just feels really lifeless and uninteresting for me. Still some gems, but the least consistent thing she's released post-Emotion imo.
Carly Rae Jepsen Binge #5
This album kicks ass. The songs on here are a lot less varied than Emotion, but the choruses and poppy melodies also consistently hit super hard and are an absolute blast through and through, and the record doesn't really have any duds, only some songs that are a lot worse than others because of the insanely high standards that the highlights of the record set. Good shit.
Carly Rae Jepsen Binge #4
More good tracks than bad, but it definitely feels like a B-Sides comp. Nonetheless, some super fun and well-written pop songs that further prove that Carly is an amazing musician.

Honestly, this one isn't much better as an album than her debut, although I do think she was leaning more towards the pop-centric ideas that she would go on to perfect later, and Call Me Maybe is still an absolute fucking slapper of a song. Definitely not a great project as a whole, but I like where this one was trying to go a lot more than Tug of War and I think that counts for something.

Not incredible as an album, but even on her first album there were some genuinely great songs that are fun, lovable, and very well written even if the production leaves quite a bit to be desired. Worldly Matters and Sweet Talker are total fuckin jams though
