Tame Impala - Deadbeat
65

I was listening to a random rave playlist and some of the songs reminded me of this album.

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
81

FTCC is their best song. Just shows how good of a songwriter May is cause I think it's the only song with her as lead (?). Rest of the songs are pretty good. Two Horses is so fun. Love the country twang. Closing track is also very very nice. Not much immediate impact here but I feel like this will be a grower. Gonna go back and listen to FTCC again.

Animal Collective - Isn't It Now?
80

IT IS NOW...

that Animal Collective have successfully morphed into a psych-prog-rock odyssey group. They have stayed trued to their roots and their musicianship remains just as authentic and unique. The songs are dreamy, atmospheric and trance-inducing, and they don't shy away from going all in with the gargantuan tracks, Magicians and Defeat placed right with each other. Their ability to musically encapsulate nostalgia and all happy childlike feelings is just as strong. While the album may ... read more

Animal Collective - Defeat
90

Wish they'd kept the explosive middle section from the music box village but still this is amazing nonetheless, especially the final section. I love how subdued and melancholy it feels overall. Invokes a lot of feels for sure.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation
84

I know this won't happen but I'd have no complaints if Kglw just became a prog metal band henceworth. ITRN was a super fun album and a good one for their first foray into metal. On PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnnation, things are significantly amped up and the band really shines. It's just insanely fucking good with the right amount of everything. While I think they have been on the top of their game, what ... read more

Paramore - This Is Why
78

An amazing album, I'm glad they didn't go full pop punk and hope they never do. There's obviously a lot of talent and creativity in this band, just look at the last three albums in their catalogue (this one included). 'The News' is one of their hardest hitting songs to date while 'Running Out of Time' might be their most fun song with amusing lyrics and a superb guitar driven chorus . More tender songs like 'Crave' and 'Big Man Little Dignity' lean more into alt rock and post-punk revival, and ... read more

Weyes Blood - And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow
92

Hauntingly beautiful, transcendental, ethereal, godly, truly unreal, makes your heart glow in the dark, baroque psychedelic ambient chamber pop masterpiece; an album for all times and ages, must be sent to outer space so the entire fucking universe can experience its awesomeness and feeeeeeeeeeeeeeel.

Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B
82

It took me some time to get into this album and fully appreciate the creativity of this eclectic duo who have chosen to forever taint themselves with a horrid name. As if that were not enough, the cover is even worse and comes off as lazy and insincere. Why am I speaking of these things and not the music? Well, because the music is really good and that's why this situation is frustrating.
Anyways, I expected this album to very glitchy and noisy, and there's a fair amount of that going on but ... read more

Alvvays - Blue Rev
87

From a little generic sounding (but good nonetheless) indie pop album that was their debut, to a much more refined dream pop album with some noise-y flourishes which was their masterful sophomore album 'Antisocialites', Alvvays on their third album, have perfected their sound into relentless, hard-biting shoegaze and noise pop. A 5 year absence didn't make them lose any of their magical touch. In fact, they came back stronger and better than ever. Almost a month with this album, and it just ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Changes
81

Tame Impala haven't even released 5 studio albums in their entire career but here King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have done that in one year, for the second time! It is 2017 all over again... (This may seem like a diss at Tame but I love them and Lonerism is an album for all times.)

Dissenters of the band will bring up the quality over quantity argument and to those people I gotta say 'The fuck y'all talking about?'. This band is both quantity and quality. Except for a slight weak spot ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Laminated Denim
78

As a huge Gizzard fan, I have to say I wasn't super impressed by these jams. The 'Made In Timeland' was interesting as it was something different at least if not perfect. Laminated Denim just seems like a flex on the band's part like 'hey we can do extended jams so here's two more that are 15 minutes each'. Not to say they're bad by any means. There are some really cool moments across the two tracks and they do go like a breeze. Hypertension especially is quite stellar and has beautiful guitar ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - The Car
75

On 'The Car', Arctic Monkeys take a step further into the sound of their last album TBH&C which for the most part leads to a more well rounded effort. The pianos and lounge-ness are taken down to bring out a more 70s classic rock aesthetic. Overall the album is quite similar sounding with its lush psychedelic textures and dreamy atmosphere, and it doesn't stray far from that which is fine but a slight drawback. However, there are some unique cuts like the tense and dramatic 'Sculptures of ... read more

Taylor Swift - Midnights
61

After the phenomenal sister albums Folklore and Evermore in 2020, followed by the re-recordings of two of her old albums last year, expectations for Midnights were definitely high. There was no single or promotion for this album except for Taylor Swift revealing the name of the tracks dramatically on TikTok. The last reveal was of the track titled 'Snow on the Beach' featuring Lana Del Rey. This was an exciting moment for quite a lot of people including me. Taylor has cited Lana as the best ... read more

Dry Cleaning - Stumpwork
78

With Stumpwork, Dry Cleaning have crafted quite an eerie and almost dystopian post-punk record. The instrumentation may not convey that all the time but there's a tension lying underneath it all. Florence's deadpan spoken word delivery is the driving force of this as she speaks of modern life and describes things in the most absurdly realistic ways. It feels like a bitter musical comedy for the political climate we live in right now. This approach doesn't always work perfectly but when it does, ... read more

The 1975 - Being Funny in a Foreign Language
76

The one thing about The 1975 which I found really frustrating was how bloated their albums were. While ILIWYS and ABIIOR were overall quite decent, their last album NOACF suffered heavily due to it. Sure, the band could have more 'experimental' tracks but they failed to provide a fulfilling album experience. BFIAFL is their first album that actually does manage to feel like a proper album. There's a perfect balance of all the styles they have done so far (save for the electronic/ambient). This ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava
84

On their first albums of October 2022, KGLW take a proper conceptual dive into the seven musical modes. Now I am not a music theorist but I like it when the band does stuff like this 'cause I get to learn something new on top of listening to awesome music.

Mycelium, the opener, is perhaps their most joyous and vibrant song, which is the characteristic of the Ionian/Major mode. It will definitely have you floating or dancing along to its steady driving rhythm. With bright instrumental ... read more

black midi - Hellfire
85

Well why this is like an extremely fucked up broadway show and I mean that in a positive way. My initial reaction on listening to Cavalcade was feeling that it was the greatest prog album in recent memory and while that sentiment cooled off a little, I would still say it's up there.
Hellfire is essentially Cavalcade but way more chaotic. In it's harshest moments, it is absolutely brutal and insane. The tender moments are aplenty as well and create a good variety of sound. The opener Hellfire ... read more

Let's Eat Grandma - Two Ribbons
76

Two Ribbons is a beautiful and heartfelt musical ode to friendship that explores the relationship between the duo themselves. Members, Rosa and Jenny are childhood friends and you can just hear it in the lyrics, how much of a personal and emotional project this is. From the swampy and mystical lo-fi sound of their debut to the ambitious synthpop and electronic rock of the second, the third one sees them delve further into the sophomore's sound with songs like 'Watching You Go' and 'Insect ... read more
