The Box Tops - The Letter

I'm really not a fan of the raspy singing here, and beyond that there's really not much to this song. I guess the rocket noises or whatever that was supposed to be at the end were kinda interesting?

Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own

What a terrible cover, took everything good about the original and threw it out in favour of making the most boring piano ballad known to man

Tommy James & The Shondells - Hanky Panky

The name maybe doesn't give this song the best first impression, but I think this is a pretty decent piece of garage rock. Obviously it's very repetitive but that's very clearly intentional and I don't think it hurts the song. The instrumental definitely carries the song though, with the guitar solo especially being a highlight for me.

The Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black

#161
Perhaps the most overrated us number one single of all? The instrumental is certainly unique but I don't know, I just don't vibe with it at all, and even if I did like it more I'm not sure that would justify the reputation as one of the best songs of all time that this song seems to have. The humming at the end is also just straight up annoying... Perhaps the lyrics have something profound to say but as usual for me I have never really paid much attention to them. Petula Clark - My Love

#153
The instrumental is great and Petula's singing is pretty good, which makes this a decent song overall. I prefer this over her other chart topping hit Downtown from the year before

Lou Christie - Lightnin' Strikes

The chorus is decent and I like the brief guitar solo, but the rest of the song is pretty mediocre.

The Beatles - We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper
60

#152
On the billboard chart topping release we can work it out was the a-side and thus the song that hit number one, but I'm a bit confused about how the chart rules worked at the time since day tripper was also charting lower in the top 10 at the same time? Anyways the point I wanted to get to was that I think day tripper is by far the better of these two songs, and rating this on we can work it out alone makes this probably one of the Beatles' weakest US number 1 singles. I'm ... read more

Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence

The version that topped the hot 100 was actually the "electric version", which has a folk rock-esque instrumental which was apparently added in post for a single realese without S&G's knowledge. The acoustic version is probably a bit better, but I still like both versions of the song and it's known as a classic for a reason.

The Dave Clark Five - Over and Over

And we end 1965, otherwise a pretty good year, on a real dud. This song is just bad, the chorus is annoying, the instrumental is unpleasant, and even though it's less than two minutes long it feels like it drags on for too long.

The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)

#149
Sounds a lot like their previous number one "Mr. tambourine man", and once again I think it's the guitars that really make the song. I think I prefer this one slightly over "Mr...".

The Supremes - I Hear a Symphony

#148
Another Supremes song where it kinda feels like they're just following a formula, but if it works it works. and this like their other number ones is a good song.

The Rolling Stones - Get Off of My Cloud

#147
Not as great as "(I can't get no) satisfaction" but still a great song with a lot of energy.

The Beatles - Yesterday
80

#146
Probably one of their most famous but not one of my favourites. I think I just prefer uptempo songs more than slow ones like this. It's also such an ubiquitous song that it's kinda hard to hear with fresh ears.

The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy
60

#145
A decent mid 60's tune, it's hard to think of much to say about it. The guitar solo is nice I guess 🤷‍♂️.

Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction

#144
It's a cool piece of history as a protest song and a look into the politics of the 60's, but as a song it's nothing special.

The Beatles - Help!

#143
Another great single from the Beatles, I like this one a lot. They really were putting out banger after banger back then.90/100

Sonny & Cher - I Got You Babe
65

#142
It's a decent song, I honestly can't really think of anything to say about it.

Herman's Hermits - I'm Henry VIII, I Am

#141
A big improvement on "Mrs. Brown..." but still not exactly a good song. The guitar solo was nice though and I do genuinely find the "Second verse, same as the first" bit a bit fun.

The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Really great song, that guitar hook is iconic.

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man

I like the guitar playing, very pretty. I'd probably rather listen to this than the Dylan origial, though they are both charming in their own ways.
