The Supremes - Baby Love
68

#120
Sounds basically exactly the same as their previous number one "Where did our love go", so the same goes for this song as I said about that one. I guess I like this one slightly more, but I can't really say why.

Manfred Mann - Do Wah Diddy Diddy
70

#118
Pretty catchy song, but it ends a bit abruptly. "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" is a pretty stupid song title though, but I guess it works. Can't think of much more to say, 70/100

Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman
77

#118
I like the recurring guitar riff and the singing from Roy is decent, but I find some of the lyrics a bit cringe. Overall it's a decent song.
77/100

The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun
90

#117
Very good song, I like the organ which is prominent throughout the song. Still not the best number one of 1964 in my opinion. I can't think of much more to say, so I'll leave it at that.

The Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go
65

#116
The first number one song for The Supremes, who will be a mainstay for the rest of the 60's, and it's completely fine. Many of the Supremes' other number ones sound very similar to this song, and while it was clearly a formula that worked, I've never really been able to get into these songs in the way that other people seem to. For this song specifically I'm not a big fan of the saxophone solo, it just sounds a bit off to me in some way. Otherwise I don't have ... read more

Dean Martin - Everybody Loves Somebody
80

#115
Feels a bit old school compared to other number ones from 1964, but it's still an overall great song, I like both the singing from Dean and the instrumental. The background singers are also pretty cool.
80/100

The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night
92

#114
(rating only A Hard Day's Night)
Of the Beatles' early US number ones this one is by far my favourite, but I can't really say why. In most ways it's quite similar to some of the Beatles' earlier number ones, like "I want to hold your hand". Maybe it's my favourite because of the iconic opening chord, maybe it's the guitar solo, or maybe it's the cowbell in that one part, I don't really know.
92/100

The Four Seasons - Rag Doll
60

#113
These four seasons number ones are getting quite hard to distinguish. Of their 60's number ones though this one is the last, and it's also probably the best. Still, it's not like it's their best by a long shot or anything, this song is still pretty similar to all their other number ones from this time, the singing is just a little less "abrasive" here.
60/100

The Beach Boys - I Get Around
93

#112
I love this song, the harmonies are awesome and the instrumental goes super hard, I especially like the guitar solo. This might be my favourite number one of 1964.
93/100

Peter And Gordon - A World Without Love
55

#111
A very unremarkable song, hard to find much to say about this. The singing and instrumental are pleasant enough I guess, but the song doesn't really stand out in any way.
55/100

Jorge Ben - Fôrça bruta
90

I love this album, it's one of my favourites of all time. The whole album just has such an immaculate vibe to it. Of course the album is entirely in portuguese, so I have no idea what it's actually about, but that doesn't really bother me. My favourite songs are "Oba, Lá Vem Ela", "Charles Jr.", "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" and "Fôrça Bruta", although really I think almost all songs on the album are capable of standing ... read more

The Dixie Cups - Chapel of Love
50

#110
The song has a pleasant vibe, but I'm not the biggest fan of the singing, and the song feels a bit repetitive.
50/100
Also unrelated to the song but this single cover with 4 paper cups attending a wedding is probably the funniest one I've seen yet.

The Beatles - Love Me Do
57

#109
A bit of a change of pace from the Beatles' three first number one singles, which all felt kind of similar to me, but I don't really like this song as much as those three first number ones. The chorus is a bit annoying in my opinion, and the harmonica also gets a bit annoying after a a couple of listens. Still, it's a Beatles song, so it can't really be that bad.
57/100
Edit: Forgot to mention but I'm judging only on the strength of "Love me do", since ... read more

Mary Wells - My Guy
68

#108
A pretty catchy Motown song, but it feels a bit formulaic. I feel like when you think of a generic Motown track this is roughly what it would sound like. also find the singing a bit underwhelming, but on the whole it's still a pretty good song.
68/100.

Louis Armstrong - Hello, Dolly!
62

#107
I am not a big fan of the way Louis Armstrong sings, which definitely hurts my enjoyment of this song. The instrumental is pretty pleasant though, and the trumpet playing is nice.
62/100

The Beatles - Can't Buy Me Love
83

#106
The third straight number one song for The Beatles, and once again it's pretty good. I guess this song is slightly less energetic than the preceding "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You", but it still has a pretty similar vibe to them. I like this song a bit more than "She Loves You" and a bit less than "I Want to Hold Your Hand", so I'll give it a 83/100

The Beatles - She Loves You
80

#105
Essentially a slightly worse version of The Beatles' previous number one "I want to hold your hand". I like the instrumental to this song slightly more than that of "I want to hold your hand", but the singing in this song almost comes off as annoying at some points, like when the sing "Yesterdayyyayyy". Still, it's a very good song.

The Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand

#104
Finally we have the Beatles first number one hit. It's hard not to judge this song on the basis of what came before, because this is definitely not a perfect 10/10 song, but having just listened to over 100 mostly really boring and samey-sounding early 60's songs does kind of make it seem that way.
Anyways, what distinguishes this song most from what came before is I think just how energetic it is. I also think the instrumental sounds a lot less clean and polished when compared ... read more

Bobby Vinton - There! I've Said It Again
45

#103
Another Bobby Vinton number one, and the same goes for this as for his other number ones: Bobby sings well, but the song is just really boring. This is probably Bobby's best number one yet, but that doesn't really mean much.
45/100

Soeur Sourire - Dominique

???????????????????

How was this a number one single? I don't really know what to say song. It's pleasant I guess, but definitely not anything you need to hear twice, or even once to be honest.

I don't really know how to rate this either, I guess I'll give it a 40/100 since it's not really "bad".
