The Four Seasons - Big Girls Don't Cry

#81
Another number one from the four seasons, and once again we hear that ridiculous falsetto from lead singer Frankie Valli. This song is very similar to their previous number one "Sherry", except the singing is somehow even more ridiculous, which it definitely didn't need to be. For that reason I'm giving this song a slightly lower score than "Sherry".

The Crystals - He's A Rebel

A very catchy song. The instrumental is very catchy, and the singing, which due to record label shenanigans is actually not from the Crystals but from a different girl group, the Blossoms, is quite good. That's really all I can think off to say about this song, it's very catchy and the singing is good.

Bobby (Boris) Pickett and The Crypt-Kickers - Monster Mash
70

#79
A novelty song about a dance craze spreading across the monsters' world. I used to dislike this song from when I've previously listened through all the US number one songs, but relisting to it now I find to be quite entertaining. The main reason I used to dislike this song is that Bobby/Boris sings the song in a weird accent which I guess is supposed to funny. I still honestly don't like the "funny" accent, but it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. But ... read more

The Four Seasons - Sherry

Well... it's certainly an interesting song. Of course the ridiculous falsetto of the four season's lead singer Frankie Valli is what defines this song, and it certainly wouldn't be the same without it. Now, I wouldn't call the singing bad, but to me it doesn't really feel appropriate for this song at all. But then again, would this song have been anywhere near as successful without it? Probably not.
The instrumental is basically a non-factor in the face of the ... read more

Tommy Roe - Sheila

I'm a bit confused by the score here. This song isn't a masterpiece but I quite like it. The singing from Tommy get's a bit weird at some points, like when he sings "her name drives me insane", but overall I quite like it. The instrumental is quite simple, but I like it, and especially the drums are cool. Maybe the score is so low because Tommy repeatedly describes this Sheila as little or refers to her as a "little girl", which does sound very weird ... read more

Little Eva - The Loco-Motion

Another "Do the whatever dance" song. This song is certainly better than "Peppermint twist" which hit number one earlier in 1962, but this song still doesn't inspire me much. The instrumental is fine, but I somewhat dislike the singing from Eva.

Neil Sedaka - Breaking Up Is Hard to Do
60

#75
Another perfectly OK song. The instrumental is somewhat catchy, but Neil's singing could probably be a bit better. I guess the background vocals are quite good? I don't really know what more to say about this song.

Bobby Vinton - Roses Are Red (My Love)
30

#74
Bobby Vinton's first number one song, and a bit of a spoiler here, but I'm a bit of a Bobby Vinton hater, and this song is no exception. Vinton has a nice voice I guess, but the song is really boring, and on top of that there's just something about Bobby's singing that makes me dislike his music for reasons I can't really explain

David Rose - The Stripper

#73
Uhhhh, I don't really know what to say about this song. It's an instrumental, but unlike almost all previous instrumental number ones it certainly isn't "pleasant" or "laid-back", but it's instead super bombastic. I guess it's... fine?

Ray Charles - I Can't Stop Loving You

#72
Ray Charles continues his impeccable streak of number one songs. Sadly "I can't stop loving you" would end up as his last number one, but that doesn't at all take away from the outstanding quality of the song. Ray's singing here is better than it's ever been, and the background vocals are also amazing. The instrumental, while simple, fits the song perfectly. Honestly, just go listen to this song by yourself if you're reading this.

Mr. Acker Bilk - Stranger on the Shore

An extremely pleasant and laid-back instrumental. That's basically all I can think about to say about this song.

The Shirelles - Soldier Boy

There's lots of problems with this song in my opinion. First off, it's just boring. The entire middle of the song is just the exact same thing for two minutes, and while the beginning and end of the song are somewhat interesting, they aren't exactly exiting. On top of that I also think the instrumental sounds rather awkward at some parts of the song, especially the ending. The singing is also pretty bad in my opinion. All in all, it's not a good song.

Elvis Presley - Good Luck Charm

#69
The quality of Elvis' number one singles continues to swing wildly. This one's another miss in my opinion. The instrumental is so simple it becomes boring, the singing, while not exactly bad, isn't impressive in my opinion, and on the whole it just doesn't feel like anything happens in the song, it's just the same exact thing for 2 and a half minutes.

Bruce Channel - Hey! Baby
70

#66
Another pretty catchy song. I like the singing from Bruce even though it really isn't that impressive, but the songs main strength is the instrumental, which is very catchy. The most interesting part of the instrumental is the harmonica, which is very prominent in the song and which I like. The songs chorus is also very catchy, the "Heeeeeeeeeeeeey, heyyyyyy baby" part is very fun in my opinion. 70/100

Shelley Fabares - Johnny Angel

#68
A similar story to the previous number one song, Connie Francis' "Don't break the heart that loves you". I said about that song that while there's nothing inherently wrong with the song, I just find it very uninteresting, and I feel the same goes for this song. Shelley doesn't sing anywhere near as well as Connie though, so I've docked a few points of the score when compared to "Don't break the..." because of that.

Connie Francis - Don't Break the Heart That Loves You

#67
Quite a pleasant song, but a bit boring. The singing is good, and the instrumental is nice but rather uninteresting. "Uninteresting" is probably a good word to describe the song as a whole, it doesn't really do anything wrong, but at the same time this isn't a song I feel the need to listen to more than once.
50/100

Gene Chandler - Duke of Earl
60

#65
A perfectly OK song. The singing from Gene is pretty good, and the instrumental is perfectly serviceable, but not that interesting. The song is also a bit too repetitive. The lyrics are about Gene being the Duke of Earl and how cool and awesome that is, which is pretty funny.
60/100

Joey Dee And The Starliters - Peppermint Twist
50

#64
Another attempt to just do "the twist" again? I guess the singing and the instrumental are fine, but it's hard to get inspired by another "do the whatever dance" song. Also, the "Yeah yeah..." bit at the end is oddly similar to the end of "Shout" by the Isley brothers, which is a much better song anyways. Still, this song isn't that bad, it's just too derivative to be interesting in any way.

The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight

#63
I'm not a big fan of this song. Whoever is sing has really great voice, but does that matter when what's being sung is mostly gibberish or dumb noises? In my opinion no. The song also goes on for too long, and I don't like the background singers. The instrumental isn't that bad though I guess?
I'm probably being a bit too harsh on this song now that I'm thinking about it, because in the end it's really not that bad, and the stellar singing does still ... read more

The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman
70

#62
The first number one single from the Motown label, and while it doesn't compare to the music that would come from Motown later in the decade, it's still a pretty good song. I really like the lead vocals, but the background vocals sound a bit awkward, it seems to me they're just too high pitch. The instrumental is pretty simple compared to the instrumentals from later Motown hits, but it's still pretty good.
