Guy Mitchell - Heartaches by the Number
65

#22
A pretty catchy song. I like the instrumental, even though it's quite simple. Even the whistling, which I often find annoying, isn't that bad here. The singing really isn't anything special, but it works for the song.
Still the song feels pretty run of the mill for this era. I give it a 65/100.

The Fleetwoods - Mr. Blue

It's very similar to their previous number one hit "Come softly to me". As with that song, it's a pleasant listen, and the singing is pretty good. I like the instrumental for this song a bit more than the one for "Come softly to me", so I'll give it a 70/100.

Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife

#20
Awesome song, definitely the best number one hit yet. I love the jazzy instrumental, and the singing from mr. Darin complements it perfectly. I also like the fact that the song gets more and more intense as it goes on. The lyrics are once again about murder, but for some reason they don't feel as out of place here as the did on some of the previous number ones about murder.
In conclusion, awesome song, go listen to it, 90/100

Santo & Johnny - Sleep Walk

A pleasant listen, and it's very pretty, but there's just not very much to it. Still, it's pretty good for what it is.

The Browns - The Three Bells

This song I am really not a fan of. The instumental is fine I guess, but I dislike the way the song is sung. I also don't like the recurring a capella bits in the song. The background singers with their "bum bum"s also annoy me.
All things considered though, the song isn't that bad, so I give it a 30/100

Elvis Presley - A Big Hunk o' Love
80

#17
It's essentially what you would expect from Elvis, which is pretty good! The instrumental is very energetic and catchy, and the singing is also very energetic. There's also a pretty good guitar solo in the song. Definitely one of Elvis' best number one singles on the hot 100.
80/100

Paul Anka - Lonely Boy

Completely OK song. The singing could certainly be better, but the instrumental is pretty catchy. The lyrics aren't anything profound, but they work for the song.

Johnny Horton - The Battle of New Orleans
60

#15
it's pretty catchy, but a bit repetitive with "we fired our guns..." bit. The background vocals are also quite annoying in my opinion.
As for the instrumental, it tries to go for old school vibe, which works pretty well.
The lyrics are about "the battle of New Orleans" in question, which I know nothing about, so I can't really say much more about the lyrics than that.
60/100

Wilbert Harrison - Kansas City
70

#14
The singing here is really unremarkable, but I quite like the instrumental, even though it isn't very remarkable either. There's also a pretty good guitar solo in the song.
The lyrics are about mr. Harrisons plan to go find himself a new girl in Kansas City, where there's apparently a lot of "Crazy little women".
70/100

Dave Baby Cortez - The Happy Organ
70

#13
It's pretty catchy. I like the organ and the guitar solo, which is essentially all there is to this song, since it's an instrumental. This might actually be the first billboard hot 100 number one song with a guitar solo. At least I can't remember having heard a guitar solo in any of the previous ones, though I can't be bothered to go back through them to check for sure.
70/100

The Fleetwoods - Come Softly to Me
65

#12
A pleasant listen. The singing is pretty good, and I like the sparse instrumental, which I'm pretty sure is only a guitar and som Doo-bi-doos from the singers. The lyrics however aren't noteworthy to me, and also feel somewhat repetitive.
65/100

Frankie Avalon - Venus

#11
Rather boring song. The singing isn't anything special, but I guess the instrumental is pretty pleasant. The lyrics are basically mr. Avalon asking Venus for his dream girlfriend or whatever. Frankie specifically asks Venus for a "little girl", which sounds very weird today, but I think people back in the 50's might have interpreted "Little girl" differently than we do today.
50/100

Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee

#10
Probably the "Rockiest" song we've heard so far. Both the singing and the instrumental are very energetic. The also multiple saxophone solos in the song which I like. The lyrics tell the story of Stagger Lee murdering a "Billy". Murder was apparently a popular songwriting topic in this age, since the previous number one song "Tom Dooley" and at least one upcoming number are also about this.

The Platters - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

The singing in this song is really on point, whoever is singing has a really great voice. The instrumental is also pretty good, but at the same time it really isn't anything special. I didn't listen very closely to the lyrics, but they seem to be what you would expect from a sad breakup song.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
90

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours is known as an absolute classic, and this is a reputation the album wholly deserves.

The singing on the album, from Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham and Christine McVie, is good across the board, and the instrumentals on most songs are very catchy. "Second Hand news", "Go your own way" and "Don't stop" are some of the album's catchiest songs in my opinion.

Alvin and the Chipmunks - The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)

Honestly this song isn't as bad as I remembered it being.
The parts where the "Chipmunks" are singing are surprisingly not completely unlistenable, and I also kind of like the instrumental.
The in between parts where some man talks to the chipmunks are very unfunny though.
I barely paid any attention to the lyrics when listening, but they seem to mostly about waiting for Christmas, so there isn't really that much to say about them.
All in all this song is still probably ... read more

The Teddy Bears - To Know Him Is to Love Him
55

#7
Not a very noteworthy song in my opinion. The singing is fine I guess, as is the instrumental, but I don't really feel any need to listen to this more than once.
I can't really think of anything more than that to say about this song, 55/100

The Kingston Trio - Tom Dooley

#6
I kind of dislike the singing in this song, but I can't really say why. I also don't really like the spoken word in the songs introduction.
I also felt somewhat bored listening to this, which I haven't felt with previous number one songs.
The instrumental is more sparse than previous number one songs, but a more sparse instrumental might actually be more fitting for a song like this, so I'm not going to complain about that.
45/100

Conway Twitty - It's Only Make Believe
70

#5
The singing is once again pretty good, as is the instrumental, though not as good as in "It's all in the game"', the previous number one song.
The song's biggest issue in my opinion is that it feels a bit repetitive, which is a bit impressive considering the song is barely 2 minutes long.
Even though it's a bit repetitive I'd still say it's a good song, I'd give it a 70/100

Tommy Edwards - It's All in the Game
85

#4
This is probably my favoutite number one song of 1958, although there aren't that many to choose from.
The singing is once again pretty good, but what I like the most is definitely the instrumental. I rarely pay attention to song lyrics, but their pretty good too.
