Dale & Grace - I'm Leaving It Up to You

It's hard to find much to say about this song. It's pleasant enough, but sounds like most other songs from this time.

If anyone's actually reading through these reviews, then you might remember that I mentioned on the song "Hey Paula" that I thought I remembered having heard it while I was on vacation in Japan earlier this year, but I actually think it might have been this son I heard. I guess that just shows how unnoteworthy this song and "Hey Paula" ... read more

Nino Tempo - Deep Purple

The singing is quite weak, but I like it nonetheless, can't really say why. I also like the harmonica which stays present in the instrumental throughout the song. The spoke word bit doesn't really work however. Overall a pretty unremarkable song.

Jimmy Gilmer And The Fireballs - Sugar Shack

Wow the singing here is NOT it, it just sounds so... disingenuous? I can't really think of any good word to describe what I think is so wrong about it, but I don't like it all. The instrumental features some instrument that might be a flute, I can't rally tell, but it's really annoying. I guess it does make the song stand out at least. On the whole this is not a very good song, but I can't bring myself to hate it that much, ignoring the maybe flute the instrumental ... read more

Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet

Another Bobby Vinton number one. The same goes for this song as for Bobby's previous number one "Roses are red (my love)", Bobby sings well, but the song is just really boring. On top of that I really hate how "Blueeeeeeeeee Vellllll-vettttttt" is sung here, I find it extremely annoying, and it just ruins this song, which would've been boring but unremarkable without it.

The Angels - My Boyfriend's Back

Sounds like most other music from this era. The endless repetition of "Hey la, hey la, my boyfriend's back" is interesting, but also annoying. I guess the song is fine? It's hard to find much to say about it really.

Stevie Wonder - Fingertips

A very catchy song that's basically an instrumental. Stevie mostly plays harmonica, though he does sing a bit. The actual single is from a live show, which makes it a bit interesting, since you can hear the crowd and such.

The Tymes - So Much in Love

over the course of writing these I've notice I've call a lot of song "pleasant" and "laid-back", but a song rally doesn't get much more pleasant and laid-back than this one. The instrumental to the song which I'm pretty sure only a choir, some finger snaps and drumming works well with the singing to bring about that pleasant and laid-back vibe.

Jan & Dean - Surf City

Once again a very catchy song. Some of the lyrics are rather cringeworthy though, especially the recurring "Two girls for every booooyy" bit. The lead singing isn't very noteworthy, but the background singing on the chorus is very good in my opinion. The instrumental sounds like something you would hear from the beach boys, which isn't very surprising since this was actually just a rejected beach boys song.

The Essex - Easier Said Than Done

I've found it a bit hard to find that much to say about songs from this era, and I've realised that I've called almost every song that topped the charts around this time either "pleasant" or "catchy". So with that said, I find this song pretty interesting, because I think it's perfectly fair to call this song both pleasant and catchy at the same time. Otherwise I can't think of much to say about this song either. The singing is pretty good and ... read more

坂本九 [Kyu Sakamoto] - 上を向いて歩こう [Sukiyaki]

#92
Very pleasant song. The most interesting thing about it is of course that it's sung in japanese, but other than that this song isn't that noteworthy. The instrumental sounds like most other instrumentals from this era, although I guess the singing is pretty impressive.

Lesley Gore - It's My Party
70

#91
Another very catchy song. The singing from Lesley is pretty good in my opinion, though I've hear others call it annoying and I can certainly see that. The instrumental is very catchy, and there's also a nice instrumental break in the middle of the song.

Jimmy Soul - If You Wanna Be Happy

#90
A very catchy song. Both the singing and instrumental are very catchy, and Jimmy sings very well too. It's a shame the song isn't about anything else, because the songs lyrics certainly don't stand up to scrutiny today. Still, as I've said a couple of times I don't care that much about lyrics and the song is otherwise very catchy, so I'll give it a 70/100

Peggy March - I Will Follow Him

#89
Not a big fan of this. The instrumental isn't bad, but the singing from Peggy is quite annoying, especially during "I love him, I love him..." bits, and the background vocals are also somewhat annoying. The lyrics are just the standard love song filler of the era.

The Chiffons - He's So Fine

A pretty catchy song with not much more to it. The singing is good and the instrumental is catchy. I also like the "Doo-lang..." background vocals.

Ruby & The Romantics - Our Day Will Come

A very pleasant song. Really both the singing and the instrumental bring a very laid-back dreamy vibe to the song. The instrumental I especially like, I can't think of any other songs from this time that sound like this. There's also an organ (?) solo in the song which also complements the dreamy vibe.

The Four Seasons - Walk Like a Man

#86
Another number one from the four seasons. The same goes for this song as for the previous four seasons number ones, once again we have that ridiculous singing from Frankie Valli, but it's a bit more pleasant in this song when compared to "Big girls don't cry". I don't like the recurring "Ooo-wee-ooooooh-wa" bit in the song however. Overall I think this is probably the best four seasons number one yet, but it's not like they stand out from each other ... read more

Paul & Paula - Hey Paula

#85
A supremely unnoteworthy song. The singing from Paul and Paula is fine I guess, and the instrumental is also completely OK. The lyrics are just standard love song duet stuff.
Since I can't really think of much to say about this song, I'll share an anecdote: I was in Japan earlier this year, and I think I heard this song play somewhere there. Perhaps due to the supremely unnoteworthy nature of the song, I can't actually remember much more details about this, like when or ... read more

The Rooftop Singers - Walk Right In

#84
Another perfectly fine song. The most interesting part of the song is definitely the instrumental, which feels a bit old school even for 1963, as far as I can tell it's literally only some acoustic guitars and drums. Even with how simple it is I quite like the instrumental, it definitely differentiates this song from other number ones of the era. The songs singing is perfectly fine, but not very noteworthy in any way, and on the whole the song feels a bit repetitive.

Steve Lawrence - Go Away Little Girl

#83
Yeah I don't even know what to say about this. The singing and lyrics are fine I guess? But that doesn't really matter in the face of the song's lyrics. Now, for some previous number one songs I have defended the use of "little girl" because I thought they probably didn't mean it "like that", but there really isn't any way to interpret this song other than that he's literally talking to a child, and for that reason alone, I'm giving his ... read more

The Tornadoes - Telstar

As with most number one instrumentals of this era, it's a very pleasant and laid-back track. The song must've sounded super futuristic in 1962, as it's built around some instrument which I can't even tell what it is, nothing sounded like this back then. In fact, I don't think I can think of any song that sounds anything like this one even today.
