Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk

Pleasantly surprised (frankly, blown away) by the leap this duo made between their debut and their second LP. Unlike some of their less serious mixes that appear to have a more generic spread of pop tropes, this album feels much more coherent and tight while still having their charming personalities front and center. I noticed this specifically with how the singles felt rather hit or miss for me, but within the context of the album, I grew to love each of them like I did the rest of the album.

Similar to groups that have pun names, M*nnequin Pussy was one of those groups I never gave a chance because I thought it was a corny provocative name, but giving this short project a shot was one of the best decisions I have made in a while. People's over the top reaction to this simply bad album is so telling of how disingenuous we can be when ... read more

Finally admitting to myself (again) that I like this, after however long. Very few solid house music albums [very few in general (this site has a subgenre of vaporwave but no house OR garage genre listed)], and this was lightning in a bottle for a duo that never came close to producing anything comparable to it.
