Lizzy McAlpine - Older
77

I've been sleeping on this, but I was pleasantly surprised by a cohesive, well-thought-out project. I'm proud that she made an effort to experiment with the production and elevate a generic folk-indie-stomp-clap to something more. One the underrated projects of this year.

Fav songs: "All Falls Down", "Drunk, Running", "You Forced Me To"

USHER - Confessions
75

Been on my list but I had to listen before the Diddy allegation got him cancelled. Unfortunately, the last few tracks don't help his case. No joke, the freakiness held back the album. I could not take some of the tracks seriously; it's just too freaky for my taste. But still, this has to be one of the best albums from the toxic, horny R&B category I've encountered. For sure, a classic for the freaks.

The Marías - Submarine
75

I am happy that they were able to pull off the obvious evolution from CINEMA. They developed their unique sound and style. The album is very cohesive, both as a project and in their discography. Their funky production fits the mysterious, beautiful vocals perfectly.

Fav songs: "Run Your Mouth", "Real Life", "Lejos de Ti", "Love You Anyway", "Ay No Puedo", "No One Noticed"

Tyla - TYLA
71

It is a surprisingly well-executed afro-beat/r&b pop album that is extremely groovy. Tyla did not disappoint with cohesive and consistent bangers and keeping her production interesting. She has great vocals that I wish were more on display.

Fav songs: "Water", "Truth or Dare", "Breathe Me", "Jump", "ART", "Priorities"

Rex Orange County - The Alexander Technique
60

A disappointing listen after awaiting his return to music. Unfortunately, he has not kept up with the incredible indie-pop releases of the past few years. TAT lacks the usual energy, harmless insecure commentary, and quirky production and replaces it with try-hard seriousness, first-world problems, and repetitive production. Trying so hard to be the male version of 21st Century Blues (obviously this was a bad idea).

Brittany Howard - What Now
77

If the Alabama Shakes had a little sister, it would be this—crazy range, both vocally and musically. Howard draws an amazing balance of being soft and lullaby-like and having a full raging crashout in this project. Missing some cohesion but the display of musical talent outweighs it.

Fav songs: "What Now", "Red Flags", "Patience", "Power To Undo"

Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet
61

Two singles away from being steaming hot H&M trash. There were a few fun summer songs and ballads. Carpenter, once again, falls ‘short’ of delivering consistent ‘sweet’ sounds to her listeners.

Fav songs: "Sharpest Tool", "Coincidence", "Espresso", "Slim Pickins", "Juno"

Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
78

She's like a fun campy Kate Bush. TRAFOAMP delivers powerful vocals and memorable and catchy melodies but unfortunately lacks cohesion.

Fav songs: "Red Wine Supernova", "After Midnight", "California", "Guilty Pleasure"

St. Vincent - All Born Screaming
71

Unfortunately, it missed its moment. While it is a new step and style, it is produced so well it's uncanny and it throws off Anne's usual quirkiness.

Fav songs: "Flea", "Big Time Nothing", "Violent Times", "Sweetest Fruit"

21 Savage - american dream
67

I think I just listened to the same song 15 times but they were all fun. Lacks memorability, but it is very cohesive and well-produced.

Fav songs: "redrum", "née-nah", "see the real", "prove it", "just like me", "red sky", "dark days"

twenty one pilots - Clancy
72

A major step up from the last album. Well-produced and amazing drumming might just have saved tøp's downfall. Unfortunately, the context of their lore is needed for appreciation, so the lyricism and vocals may not be for everyone.

Fav songs: "Next Semester", "Vignette", "Lavish", "Navigating"

Maya Hawke - Chaos Angel
54

Forgettable (do something new Maya) and suspiciously bad production and recording quality.

Fav songs: "Missing Out", "Wrong Again", "Chaos Angel"

Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER
84

You must listen as a two-part project to understand the creativity of Beyoncé. Amazing vocals (as always). Historical and cultural context is needed to appreciate the lyricism, message, and album flow. Bey delivers strong vocals and musical high points. Though it fails musically as a country album, it succeeds in every other category. Easily one of the best of 2024.

Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well
67

Extra points for sampling JID. I like her more mature lyricism and broadening of lyrical subjects. It's a decent project but lacks energy on certain tracks.

Fav songs: "Cardinal", "Deeper Well", "Lonely Millionaire", "Heaven Is", "Anime Eyes"
