I think there is a very compelling argument for 2pac being the hip hop GOAT. Immense discography, potentially the most iconic voice in hip hop, perhaps the most well known rapper off all time, lyrically diverse, arguably the most dominant rapper of the greatest hip hop era, and a persona that felt larger then life. Nas is a more technical rapper but personally, PAC’s personality, voice and reflectiveness is more significant. Rakim, Jay-z and maybe big L are all contenders as well I feel.
I feel I struggled to enjoy this album on earlier listens because of my perceptions of the artists, rather than the quality of the work. The guerrilla persona’s felt corny, and over the top, and the rapping felt reminiscent of the angry white rapper stereotype which once sounded like a clockwork orange stimulus rather than music.
